I think I used to know the answer to this question,

But are we allowed to use Stock Xchange photos or other free website stock photos to create pictures as long as we put a link down to the original image? I thought we could, but I want to make sure before I do so. Thanks!

Yes, but.. a qualified 'yes'.

'You', speaking generally here.. have to ensure that the base images used by you are available for whatever particular creative end uses (i.e. publication elsewhere, on this site for one, and and..).

Have to check the restrictions attached by the authoring artists/photographers.

From their FAQ section:

7. "Can I use these images for...

You can use the images for almost anything. Of course, there are some no-no's and restrictions. Please check the corresponding part of the Image license Agreement(link) or read this more simple explanation(link)."

8. "Can I get permission to use image #xxxxx?

You need to get permission from the artist who uploaded it. SXC is only hosting the images. Click here to read more about getting permissions and contacting users."

Also note (from COC):

"If you use any material that you did not create, you must state the source of that material in the image description."
