I have always thought "tests" in the traditional sense are a bad way to assess someones ability to work in the real world... there aren't many careers that require you to complete a task within a set time period, confined to a room with no one to assist you and no notes/texts/digrams etc to assist you... I think there must be more realistic ways. Another thing I would point out is that the school system in Japan is, to the best of my knowledge, extremely stressful and not necessarily a good example to follow... I don't know about Korea though.

-----But how else? I agree stress can be a bad thing but to survive in the world today we need knowledge and we must test our knowledge so that it is well "up to date". Japan is horrible. I agree with u too on this but because they do harsh tests they are "smart" in technology. Without tests where would the competition of studying be?---- This is my opinion thx for urs it will contribute to my project ^^

Well for most tests, people just memorize information and afterwards don't really remember most of it and therefore don't learn as much as studying notest and texts thoroughly.

But don't you have to study hard to do well on a test? And saying that the information will get stuck in your head (it does for me). When you memorize don't you remember a little after a while? But these national tests people can't study for... well maybe but they can't really study for these so I hope the students will try there best to do well on the test. The purpose for the national test would be to check how the nation is doing in its education. You know like Colorado did not so good on the test so they (the state) would try and increase its education. By the way I luv ur icon. I feel that we're brothers. lol

i say tests don't really do a good job of measuring your knowledge in some cases, cuz when i take a test i get really nervous and then i do bad, no matter if i know the stuff or not.
i was in a pshychology class once where all the tests were open book, and even the final exam was a take home exam, and i think i learned more that way than in other types of classes where, like someone said you just memorize stuff then forget it after the test. but just my opinion....

There are plenty of other ways to assess what a person has learned besides testing. Assignments, presentations, reports, etc. In fact for most subjects you are given only 4-5 tests during the wholes year, and pretty much your entire education, from preschool to final year, comes down to one final examination, and everything else you have done demonstrating your abilities is pretty much disregarded. To me this is not a good way to do things.

BTW in regards to Japan, I saw (a bit) of a report recently where many leading Japanese expressed concern about their education system, unfortunately I didn't see the whole thing, I wish I had now so I could say something poignant...

polynomials aren't that hard [for me] because... well was the test on graphing them, figuring wht the roots were or something like that? In general math isn't hard at all because math is logic. ^^

i am definately FOR a comprehensive testing system in the states. i agree with samatar that the method of testing can be varied to more accurately portay a students accumen. unfortunately, most of the teachers in this country are too overworked already to put that kind of time and effort into it. i know most of my instructors in college were complete robots! but it seems to me that students today know when they are going to be tested or quizzed and study accordingly... no test this friday? no study. we need to start pressing these kids a little more.
