Click your heels together three times?

I am kidding, Lynne.

It would be of benefit to 'us' if you could elaborate on the 'why' or 'whys' you are leaving the site. Thinking.. it has to do with protecting your images, and if correct.. what exactly are looking for the site to provide you, the artist, in this regard?

(Can't 'get there from here', if 'we' don't know what the issue is.. if you understand me here.)

I know I'm not Lynne but I thought I'd say that if I google my Caedes name I can find countless photographs of mine all over the place. It would take so much time to have them all removed from the sites that have them. I guess that's the price we have to pay to be Caedes members. I'm just wondering, is it just as easy to steal from Flicker or Deviant Art?

Jeenie - yup. Any place that you upload to "share" your images. If they're available for download for free, that's all it takes.

Theoretically there are some fancy-shmancy technology things that you can do to your images to make it impossible for someone else to re-upload, but all of those that I've seen can be gotten around.

Picked a random image from photo.net ('Daily Photo Sampling From Our Members’ Work').

Went to the image's page (where members can leave critiques/comments):

"Have a seat..."

Clicked to enlarge it ... 1,500px X 1,054px ... and could save the image.

It would appear that smugmug.com prevented downloading, insofar as I could not right-click on an image there to save. Downloading being disabled, in short.

I was able to drag the image you mentioned onto my desktop and save it also. Not that I mind if people prefer other sites, but I don't think that they really have any better protection from image theft than caedes does.

Could always take a screenshot I suppose, on the sites that disable downloading of images.

Given some native monitor resolution sizes these days, would still be large enough to include in a torrent/file of wallpapers.

Though.. the quality might suffer ... some.

I too wold prefer you not to leave. Your pictures have a freshness that is needed here.

However, people do seem to forget that this is a site where we share (with the world) our art as desktops. That is, we expect people to be able to download our images to put on their desktops. Once it is on a desktop where it came from is no longer relevant. I have always failed to see the difference between my image ending up on a desktop from this site, or any other, (I post to several anyway). The image is the same, it generally has my name on it and if someone really wants to find out about the artist, all they have to do is google.

If I was selling fine art or had any other commercial enterprise from my art, then I would only put up small thumbnails that cannot be used as desktops, or anything else, on a site that sold my art. These images would not be stolen in the majority of cases as they are not suitable for desktops and cannot be made into prints.

If you are making a commercial enterprise out of your work, then do not post on sites like this. Otherwise do, and share with the world, in all the forms that that non commercial sharing takes. Creative commons would be a more realistic form of sharing from sites like this anyway.

Anyone that thinks their images are too good to be stolen should never post them anywhere on the net. Always amazes me that some people think their photos are gold, but have never come close to selling one. Not pointing fingers, but for crying out loud people, unless you are a consumate pro, get over yourselves, just post your work for others to enjoy, 'cause it's rather doubtful they could sell them either! After all, there are literally millions of photos posted on the internet every day, best of luck to anyone when it comes to selling. Just enjoy your work and hope others do as well. Most of us have a better chance at winning the lottery than making money selling photos, so click and enjoy, sheesh!

I think for many it is nothing to do with any financial consideration.
People DO make money out of the efforts of others - I have seen some of my images offered as Canvas prints, and also mousepads and mugs.
I have never made a cent from my photos - have never tried too -they are not 'gold' . Every single image I have posted here has been specifically prepared for this site - to share.
BUT what DID upset me in the past was having images of my grandchildren claimed as the work of someone else on the other side of the world, and the site they posted on throwing all their legal oomph behind their 'member'. The images were not posted as granny brags - they are both in the main galleries here and will stay on site but it was upsetting at the time that someone would do that. It takes all sorts - and they are the bad sorts.

Then there was the photo of mine that someone claimed to have taken from a moving car while on holiday in NZ! - the fact that it was of an old rowboat beside the sea and there is no road to actually be driving on did not prevent heaps of praise being lavished on the 'photographer' for such a great shot, especially under the circumstances, moving car and all that, LOL.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

...I've said this on other threads...

Use either a copywritten watermark, or logo of some kind on your submissions...It might be unsightly, and it certainly won't entirely solve the problem, but it can make it somewhat difficult (especially if you post your works on other sites) for art thieves that want to take someone else's submissions someplace (such as some of the Indo-Chinese graphics firms) where they can receive fast and easy monetary compensation...
