Quite a large basket would be needed to fit the world in. I doubt some of us would fit in individual ones. I believe the expression originated from when decapitated criminals had their heads carted away in baskets - and of course because of their misdemeanors were sure to go to Hell.
So unless there has been a large number of unreported decapitations recently - no, I for one don't think so.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

The World - is a vibrant and ever changing environment that will continue to evolve whether I am here to contribute to change it or not. Hell - is an environment envisioned by the individual. A hand-basket- is a convince device to transport your stuff. Now that all this is established, I think that there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who make things happen, and those who let things happen. If you think the world is going to hell, then you are not contributing your fair share and you are letting things happen. If you are contributing but still think the world is going to hell in a Hand-basket, then you are not carrying your fair share of the weight. What does this all mean in plain English - if you are not contributing - then quit your complaining. If you are carrying the hand-basket choose your path carefully. I think the World is a Wonderful place with a few un-wonderful people in it. Think positive my friend, it sure make life more interesting.

That's just an expression, of course...not meant to be taken literally...generally meaning, things are deteriorating...and while the world may be a wonderful place, it doesn't take much looking around to see that many things are deteriorating...jobs, the economy, trust in government, morals, a little thing called common courtesy, just to name a few...so, yes, I do agree...and though I don't like to be negative, I tend to think things may get worse before they get better.

I have been fortunate, throughout my life, to be able to enjoy the good times when they have been present and to be able to work my way through the times that have been bad. I guess there is some natural resiliency in my natural insanity.

I think every generation believes that they are the greatest generation. I think they also believe they have it worse than any previous group. I suspect both are true to the beholder and incorrect to everyone else.

An easy Google search will show the origins of “going to hell in a handbasket.” It may be used more by Americans and the phrase “going to heaven in a wheelbarrow” may be used more by the English. Both pale in comparison to the casechaserian phrase, “going to Michigan, I’ve been bad!!!” Those of you from Ohio will understand that phrase.

I am sure the used expression was meant more locally than has been assumed by the comment leavers so far. Is it? A little, but there are glimmers of hope on occasions. And the occasional post to smile about.
