Digital Dilemma

Since I moved to Digital I have found myself in a dilemma. While I definitely take more photos I tend to print fewer pictures. I tend to be much more critical of the “snapshots” I take at family outing and such not wanting to waste the paper of the lab. This has let to an outcry from family members who want to see the pic I took of them and uncle Bob, the one I deleted ‘cause I didn’t like the composition of it was just a little blurry. When using a film camera I kept everything Now I only keep what I consider to be the prime pics.

I wanted to know if anyone else was experiencing this, if so maybe we could start a support group.

I think that it is probably worth it to keep a digital copy of everything that you take. Photos are reletively small as compared to modern hard disk drive capacity. If you have a small memory card on your camera you might have to delete some occasionally in order to continue shooting (if you are away from your PC), however that isn't really a delima since you can always buy a larger memory card. Also, deleting bad nature shots is a bit different than deleting bad family photos since the family subject arguably have a value in addition to the artistic content.

if your family are just wanting a hard copy of the photos then just ask them to pay you for the paper and ink.

Actually I store all photos on DVDs in a CD Carosel witha database. I have 4 512mb cards and a 1gb micro drive. It isn't a space issue.
I've just gotten real picky.

not only to I keep the subpar images, but I also save stages in enhancements and manips of good images. considering the size of a picture on a hard drive or dvd or whatever, I dont see the point in deleting them.

I have the same situation. I'm quite critical of my own work, and only print the shots I'm happy with. I also take a while to go through shots and do a little processing before deciding which to print. I used to come back from a holiday with half a dozen rolls of film, drop them in at a one hour lab, and then we could sit down and look through the results the first day back. Now I take a lot more shots, get back with cards full of raw images, spend at least a fortnight reviewing and processing them, upload them to a print lab and get back fewer prints than before although (to me) better ones. But by then the moment has passed and a lot of the interest has gone....

But no, I don't want to start a support group, thanks ;-)

With digital I take more photographs and discard the duds. With film I used to keep everything. I have boxes and boxes of not very good (read awful) photos that I don’t want anyone to see. I think the present situation is better. None of the keepers are out of focus or show granny with a lamppost sprouting from her head. So I don’t mind anyone looking through my digital collection.

I don’t print many, but the ones that get printed are worth printing. If the relies want a few prints I lend them a flash disk with the photos they want and send them to the minilab. I can’t buy 6x4 paper for the price the minilab charges for a finished print. So I tend to only print the big ones.

Thank you for providing me with some sort of redemption.

you do have a support group, but if you're waiting for us to bail you out on her part, forget it, we've got the same problem...

not much i can say in regards to this topic.. but i had to chime in.. BB's comments are just too funny haha.. i wish i had the problem of taking tons and tons of photos, but the digital camera i have is rather old (its one that uses floppy disks, as compared to mem sticks).. at full res, i only get 4-8 pictures per disk, depending on light/exposure/etc.. but enough rambling.. i would have to agree with BB on the send them to WalMart thing hehe.. blank CD is very cheap.. and this way, they can print out exactly the ones they want..
