Poo - or - Art?

The other day at an abandoned building location, I almost stepped into a pile of Poo! My first thought, instead of being "Oh! Poo! how yucky, I almost stepped into something that would of surely caused much comment at the coffee shop." I was instead happy that I was able at an advanced age to notice minor abnormalities in the environment. Instead of turning away in disgust. I reached for my camera, (I always take three basic types of cameras with me, my cell phone, my point and shoot, and my DSLR) and took a picture of it.

Many times when I feel inspired, I get on my motorcycle and cruise for locations that invite creativity. Where does this inspiration originate from? Sometimes it is the byproduct of boredom, sometimes it is an idea I wish to create a project of, before I forget what the idea was. Sometimes it is originated from stupid behavior, that results in angering my wife. On this particular day, I must of been drunk on Stupid.

I took a picture of Poo! one with my cell phone, one with my P&S camera, and one with my DSLR. This simple stupid act, caused quite a problem for me. If the discussion on the type of equipment you use, is of real importance, then it should be absolutely non-debatable that the photo generated by the DSLR if the best. But when I review the pictures, they all still look like Poo! Should I abandon the use of my DSLR? because it cannot elevate the photo of Poo to look interesting and of high quality?

I thought I had sobered up from my drunk on stupid session. What happened next causes me to doubt my sobriety. I was wondering. If the type of camera is not really as important as I assumed, then it must be style and talent that can render the picture of Poo, into an interesting work of art. Maybe if I work with it in Photoshop, I can feel the pride of turning Poo into Art.

My wife, was at times looking over my shoulder, and assuming, I was enjoying another challenge in my chosen hobby. But! when she saw the Poo and ask details, she smiled and left me in peace, muttering something about "why she married stupid" as she left the room.

Its been many hours and many creative disasters later, on turning Poo into art. I am frustrated enjoying little success. Is there a filter in Photoshop that would be of help in my quest? Should I post the picture of Poo as is, and hope it is favored by someone? Should I abandon the idea that talent and creativity just wont work with some subjects?

The greatest challenge in my career is to turn Poo into art. Would it be safe to assume, that lack of comment on this subject, means, this is a closely guarded secret? or could it possibly mean that its just a waste of time to comment of Poo! The non hobbyist people at the Coffee Shop would surely comment on it. I need your fresh ideas. Otherwise I will probably need professional counseling, to remain sober from stupid.

Beleive it or not I can recall that at least one (new) member has uploaded a photo of dog doo to the site. It did not receive a warm welcome (either from the membership or the mods, it was quickly removed as a COC violation). Then again said photograph had absolutely no artistic merit...

I don't see 'art' (aside from the facets of a pleasing composition, lighting, etc.) factoring heavily into the appreciation equation of ... poo.

Regardless of presentation.

"Should I abandon the idea that talent and creativity just wont work with some subjects?"

Maybe.. yes (as I can think of some others as well).

However..

You might end up with an image that is 'evocative'(/visceral), perhaps. And to some (the majority?) ... for the wrong reasons. That could be a good good thing in some critique circles, an impactful image in short.

I can.. see a use for the subject material in an editorial context (my mind, thoughts and perceptions must be conditioned somewhat, let's say).

Insofar as a creative quest to change poo into art?

I shall await the results of your artistic endeavour(s). :o)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Not to join the party late but... I once took a photograph of our dog dropping a load... dogs always look so sheepish during the, ummm, event and I just couldn't resist. So far I haven't put it up anywhere though. ;-)
