What's with all the crazy new members names that show up in the active members list? Aren't there enough actual members anymore to fill out the top 100?

Jim, the reason they show up in the active members list is due to the amount of space they use on the site with their spam.

This site needs a Captcha and email verification on the registration otherwise the spam bots will overwhelm us.

The last time I looked at that list(on 30/11/12) 5 spam names were there but I was amazed when I looked just now to see only 15 out of the 100 names appear to be genuine members. I think maybe the bots already have overwhelmed us!
It looks very bad.
85 spambots are contributing more to the discussion boards than mmbers are.
It would be good if discussion contributions were excluded from the total activity tally of members.

Looks like we have been spam bombed.

Almost every time I look at Users online there is one of them there.
I wish they could be stopped before they spread their garbage. I have given up on even using the complain button.

I agree, the spam has gotten way out of hand! Is there anything that can be done about this?

I'm working on it. We automatically review suspicious comments and new accounts, but it takes a while for us to go through them all when we get a lot at once. They will eventually be deleted though. I'm also working on a better prevention system as well.

I've been dealing with other issues and so haven't looked at the list for at least a month or more. Wow. No kidding we've been overrun but good to know Geri's working on it. Really great to see your comment Geri, and to know you're still here.

Keep an eye on the charity shops. ;-) I got my sister a nice shoulder bag with a cat design.

Last year we had a bot that appeared as a member of the Caedes Kiva team, using a generic b&w illustration of a couple (probably from a Kmart picture frame) for their avatar. They showed up one day, sending inquiries to the other 10 members for personal information. That and the fact that they made no loans whatsoever were the immediate clues that this was a wonky member. We brought it to the attention of the Kiva organization but it took nearly a month to get rid of it. Hopefully here at Caedes they're only annoying, filling the "Most Active Members" list and nothing more.

Ok, I finally went through all the comments (300 or so in the pending queue) and banned all the spammers. I also made a change on the registration page that will make it more difficult to get new accounts. If you see any spam comments that are still on the site, please use the "complain" button to let me know about it (only use the button once per spam comment).

I still count 7 bots in the "Most Active" list (at least they appear to be bots) but it's a big improvement and still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
