One Year Later

As of the 20th of this month it will have been a full year since the last time I posted an image here. Not that I haven't been here lurking in these forums or browsing the new images from time to time, I simply have not created anything to post.

Desktop wall paper is an obsolete genre. Tablets and phones are quickly replacing the desktop for the majority of people. Hardly anyone is searching for "great desktop wallpapers" any more. G+, 500PX, and others have captured the high end for photographers. Flicker and facebook seem to satisfy the rest. Can't say where the digital artists have gone.

(In my opinion) Caedes has become dated, old, unmaintained, probably unprofitable, completely abandoned by its former glory, and sadly infested with people who it seems would be better served sharing their snapshots on facebook. (To harsh?)

I joined Caedes because I was so impressed by what I saw that I wanted to tell the artists how great they were. Later that inspiration led to a desire to participate. I posted crap, but with time and help I got better.

There does not seem to be enough old timers left to grow the masses of beginners on the site these days.

Over the years some people moved on, some died, some of the best got so tired of having their work ripped off they just deleted their galleries and quit, and finally some just got mad took their ball and went home.

Highly artistic people in general seem to me to be quirky people. They often have difficulty getting along with each other in the long run.

Watching these boards fill with frustration, anger, and what to me simply resembled mental illness really killed my interest for a while. Then some one gave me another hobby to spend my time and money on and that was that.
I was gone.

So now, after a year away the creative bug is biting me harder and harder. My camera sits here on my desk unused, but nagging me to pick it up and get creative again.

Should I do it? Should I get back into the game here on this seemingly nearly dead website?

Should I bother?

What say you?

Well Dave, you can join the masses who left over all of the above reasons, whether real or imagined, OR you can help those who are new(er) on the site and show them what the site is really all about.

Whether desktops are gone (mine are not), there is still artistic creativity which I hope never disappears.

We can share so much here that isn't social media or cell phone quality.

Whether or not the site is neglected,is up to the members who are posting or 'lurking 'as you stated.

We, as photographers collectively, may be quirky but most put all of the heart and soul that they have into what is posted.

Not all images are perfect but everyone needs to start somewhere.

We all can begin CPR on the site and be aggressive about it.

Nothing stays the same, change is inevitable and often times scary, but usually a necessary thing.

We can go with the flow or take our ball and images and go sulk.

Anything on the web is subjective to rip. I choose to view it as a compliment rather than getting angry and fighting and moaning about it.

After all, I am the one who put it out there.

The moderators do their best to watch for 'rips' on the site....not all are caught but many are.

The choice is yours Dave, we left the light on for you :)

The site does need to evolve. Personally I would love to see a "caedes app" I could access on my phone/tablet; I don't think too many changes need to be made as you can already upload images in any size format and the site automatically adjusts the image to fit your device;perhaps some integration with facebook, pinterest etc would help.

The main issue though is that Caedes seems to have moved on to bigger and better things and (as far as I can tell) spends very little time on this site any more. I think it's surprising that the site is still here at all, but at least he is obviously still spending enough time on it to keep it running relatively smoothly. I hope one day he will regain his enthusiasm and get this place moving again, but I can completely understand how he could have lost interest after over a decade.

In the meantime, we as a community have to do our best to keep things fresh and interesting. Any new ideas are always welcome...

Kudos to "Caedes" for keeping it going and especially for "spending enough time on it to keep it running relatively smoothly". Battling the spammers and trolls probably takes considerably more effort than we know. Not to mention routine maintenance.

Cutting to the chase..

"So now, after a year away the creative bug is biting me harder and harder. My camera sits here on my desk unused, but nagging me to pick it up and get creative again.

I find my creative interest wanes at times.

And perhaps more so.. it is simply a matter of available time.

So..

I think I will always mess around, post something at some points in time. To satisfy the personal desire and creative urges.

And specifically.. post to this site here.

Why?

i) There are a number of members who's input I still value.

ii) I feel like I am giving something back for all that was given to me, in terms of shared knowledge et al.

iii) The alternatives.. meaning, posting other sites ... is just not feasible for me. Time-wise.

And for me to get something out of wherever and whatever time I do expend.. makes more sense to me to keep it under one site's roof.

Should you bother?

Sure.

And I get as much out of posting as I do with respect to some of the other activities that the site offers. In particular, commenting on other member's images.

So.. I get my fix and can call it a day here.

And it works for me.

Even though I am to Caedes what the character Abby Sciuto is to NCIS (namely, a misfit)...I think this site should remain for any other reason as a more pleasant and peaceful alternative to dA (DeviantArt), which is in my opinion, now laden with mostly troublemaking, lazy, opinionated, and entitlement-minded kids...This is why I ventured into here and started posting in the first place...

Just change the heading from "Desktop Wallpaper" to just "Caedes" alone...or "An artists' community"...Possibly all you need...

But, whom am I to give any advice?
