Would everyone be so nice as to test this new gallery page for me? It uses some pretty fancy javascript (for me). It is significantly faster than the current gallery because it doesn't have to reload from the server when changing gallery pages.
Just go to a gallery and click on "hyper-mode" near the top of the page.
It works on what appears to be normal speed here at work, and this, being the oldest computer in the office (next to the copier so I am kept busy for the moment), probably has not the most recent version if IE. It says 6.0, but it is windows 95 or 98 and I highly doubt it has been upgraded. I am not very familiar with the connection speed, so I will try again at home and let you know how snappy it is.
The speedup is not for the initial load, it is changing between pages and sort methods that is improved. In fact the initial load is actually slower right now since it is not using mod_perl.
" Updated again. You should now be able to open the images in new windows or tabs. "
Apparently not. Your javascript seems to be forcing the link to open in the existing tab.
I usually open links in new tabs, but that's broken. In the latest Camino nightly, it just loads in the existing tab. In OmniWeb 5.1 it loads in the existing tab AND in a new tab. In Firefox (latest nightly) or Mozilla 1.7.8 it loads in the existing tab and opens a new tab with a 500 Internal Server Error message. I don't have the latest Safari yet. Makes using a tabbed browser kinda pointless...
I too am using Safari in Panther and I just noticed that when it is "sorted randomly" it is really sorted by date and when it is "sorted by date" it is really random (I think).
I'm really into goth rock and new wave. My favorite band is The Birthday Massacre. The guy in my avatar is, in fact, a guy. His name is Mana from the band Malice Mizer.
I've enabled you to view all the current gallery in the new 'hyper' mode. Just click on "switch to hyper mode" at the top of each gallery. It doesn't currently work for the author galleries though.
Actually I have found that the images take alot longer to load for me, and some of them don't load at all. I don't know why, it worked very well in the test. Maybe because now more people are trying to use it at the same time? Anyway I think I will be sticking with the old galleries for now.
One minor thing: The "next page" button is located at the top of the page, which is a bit inconvenient. It seems it would be more useful located at the bottom, since most people scroll through the images from top to bottom.
That was the mode yesterday before I updated the code. If you refresh the page or clear out your cache it should reload the javascript and keep the settings now.
Caedes, I kind of liked how you could hold your pointer over an image, and it would display the author of the image. In hyper mode it just displays "tn". Other than that....hyper mode works superbly. =0)
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
Better alt text will be added later, it isn't a difficult or very important feature. I also fixed a bug that was preventing the browser from remembering the settings after the browser was closed. It should now keep the 'perpage' and sort method settings now.
I'm running the latest versions of XP and IE and it works great but I had a question. Why is the maximum number of images 18 while in norman more you can go up to 36? Were you trying to avoid problems with slower connections?
I haven't set it to 36 because it would then preload 36 images after the initial 36 were loaded. 72 images take quite a bit of bandwidth. I'll probably just modify the preloader so that it will only preload the first 12 images reguardless of the number displayed.
I was thinking it'd be cool to have the next and back buttons at the bottom of the page, so I can scroll to the bottom and then go to the next page without scrolling to the top again.
Yes I know. That will be added. I've just not done it yet since it will not be very fun to code. It is more complicated than just putting the html 'down there.'
i really like just having 12 images, because then i can scroll through a whole bunch without actually scrolling because its already preloaded so theres no waiting. i just have the page so i can see all 12 (maybe you could somehow make the page so it just puts as many images on the viewers screen size as possible without having a scroll bar???) then i can keep the next button inside the window at all times, they work great!
Works perfectly for me in epiphany on linux. This is the most amazing thumbnail browsing system I have ever seen; I will never browse for wallpapers anywhere else because I am so in love with the "hyper mode" gallery. As for how many images to put, having 12 is fine because you can scroll through so quickly. I'd think any more would clutter the page. Whatever you do, ensure that the thumbnails do not make the page scroll... autodetecting how many will fit in the browser window based on its size is the way to go.
Good morning Caedes
Still using IE (V6, XP, SP2) (quick grin). I only display 12 images at a time - easier to see in one screen at 1024x768, and as reformist said above, more than 12 clutters the page. Tried the experimental hypermode tonight. On my current connection, the pre-load seemed to make little difference to the final display of the subsequent page, though it may be the Laptop I'm working on (Pentium M 1700Mhz processor, 512 RAM, 128Mb video ram) - still waited about the same time. Miss the display of title/author/gallery when I hover the mouse cursor, and the ability to display only from a certain size and bigger.
Enjoy your day
Romane
Agree with Romane, miss the display of title/author/gallery when I hover the mouse cursor, and when i click on return to normal nothing happens. Best wishes. Dwight.
Thank you for this ... this, faster galleries, thingamabob
I started having troubles navigating this site a few months back ... a lot of thumbs don't load .. sometimes the entire page structure is DOA ... but I am having no such problems using this gallery feature ... maybe you understand that better than I do since I would have trouble picking CSS, XHTML, JavaScript out of a police lineup
If you should make this experiment permanent ... maybe a setting in the user's profile for determining how many pages to pre-load ... and whether they'd like coffee or tea while browsing
(*PS*) .. im using firefox 1.04 ... and if a page dumps me back out to "normal" galleries .. (like, closing out a Personal Message window) I'm back to the missing thumbs again
I didn't bother reading this page due to it's length. The new galleries are great, but I noticed that when browsing and I go to an image, comment, then vote; after all that I hit back and it sends me right back to the gallery [not the past 2 pages I just went through i.e.: commenting and voting] but when I get there it doesn't remember my view settings. For example; start with "sort by date," go vote and comment, return and it's set to "sort by c-index." Don't know if this is a concern of Caedes or not. Just relaying the info I spotted in hopes of helping.
Ok, I've got Firefox 1.03, but nothing's loading for me except the little description and the drop menus. No images. Can anyone help me please? I have Java enabled in the options...
I'm really not sure of what it could be. I'm using the same firefox version as you. Are there any errors in the javascript console (under the tools menu)?

I guess the only thing I still wish was here..is to have the name of the place where the photo was taken...I forget where and when I tell someone about it, I would love to be able to let them know...

Didn't read all the comments in this discussion due to a lack of motivation...but the only thing I'd say you could add to this "hyper mode" is the page buttons on the bottom as well [<] page 1 of 400 [>]...gets annoyning after a while gotta keep scrolling back up and goin to the next page when its on 18 pics at a time on 1280x1024 res still gotta continually scroll up...OTHERWISE I LOVE HYPER MODE A LOT! BEAUTIFUL!

This is great. Much faster and very smooth. I like the ability to scroll from one page to the next. The pictures load immediately. I use Win XP IE. Agree that buttons at the page bottom would be nice.
I love the new faster gallery viewing. But... I would love to see a browsing bar or what to call it (with the right and left arrow on the sides), below the thumbnails. I'm unfortunately sitting by a screen that makes me scroll down on the page and I think it's a pain to scroll back to the top to browse on further. It sort of defies the whole idea of a faster gallery.
Dang. I'm slow today. I was going to write that I wasn't sure this had been brought up before but I see now that it is exactly what is said two posts above... Well... I guess it needs some attention still then. Sorry for the bump.
Considering how crappy the computer is that I am often using while here I may not be getting the full benefit of this but I must say it is still a vast improvement over normal mode...I love how quickly each page loads.:Pat.
Absolutely love the faster loading of images (or pre-loading as the case may be). Works great on Firefox 1.5, although I agree with hobgoblin, it would be much better if next/previous button was on the bottom for those of us with less than ideal sized monitors.
It works well in my browser, Konqueror 3.5 (Apple copied it to make Safari) except for the fact that the thumbnail previews do not enlarge into a tooltip with a bigger preview like they used to but that only worked on the Windows version of Firefox and not in any other browser. I liked that as the thumbnails are pretty little and the blow-up is nice. I also wish there was a page navigation button/menu at the bottom of the page.
Apple originally used the KHTML rendering engine in return for sharing its own development results with the Konqueror 'KDE' development community which it subsequently did. this was back in 2002 before Safari's launch the year after. and it still doesnt render pages correctly all the time. pain in the butt.
Works great!! Thanks for it. Two things I would like to see (and these very well may have been mentioned above)
1) Forward and Back buttons at the bottom of the page. I don't like having to scroll back up to change the page.
2) Let me see more images on one page.
Other than that, it's awesome. Blazing fast. Thanks for it.
Why are you crazy people still using IE? I understand if you HAVE to because of work, ect, but who in their right mind would subject themselves to such torture?

I use the Avant Brower, I switched to hyper mode and the pictures come up instantly. I dint like scrolling back to the top for next page and the limit of 18 images per page, but I can live with the speed. A next page button on the botton would be a swell tool. Thanks
ahhh! that explains why I am having problems uploading a photograph tonight! I have problems with Java on my IE and everytime I try to upload a picture, I get the page "Can't find page" and have tried about 6 times now. I am heading off to my Firefox to see if it works there. :)
Thank you Caedes for fixing the upload problem. :) and thanks for all the hard work you and the other members who work on this site put into it! ...and about the galleries - the hypermode is excellent! - works like a treat! - the pictures appear at lightening speed and I am now browsing at breakneck pace! LOL!
In Firefox clicking on the hyper mode button on top basically refreshes the page still in normal mode. In IE it works fine though - I'm using mainly IE now due to some problems with Firefox, but I sometimes use Firefox and the hyper mode doesn't work then. What's up with that?
Not sure if this is the right area to post, but since it was titled "Faster Galleries" I thought it might be.
Is anybody else experiencing very sluggish load times? I've noticed that the past few days, checking the new images gallery has been very slow, and loading images at their full size is also taking a while. I'm not having this trouble on other sites (aside from MySpace, which is usual) so I thought I'd check in.
I'm experiencing a little of both. I notice it especially when I click on the "New Images" gallery. It doesn't load for me as fast (I tested both "normal" and "hyper" mode) and then when I'm trying to click on the thumbnail to see the full version -- for leaving feedback -- it's slower for me too.
I've cleared my cache, just in case, and have also shutdown and restarted my PC. I am running WinXP with plenty of RAM and I have a high speed cable connection. Hope that helps!

Just go to a gallery and click on "hyper-mode" near the top of the page.
