eye damage

I noticed in my camera manual that it said not to get too close to your subject because it can create eye damage. This kind of worried me because I took some self portraits where all I did was stick out my arm to hold the camera away from me and then took several pictures. So I guess my question is how close is too close?

I never saw this caution... Which damage? With the flash maybe?

I think if you take tens and tens of photos at 30 cm of your eye, there is a risk of damage.
But don't worry for a few photos. If there was a damage, your vision would be worse...
When could we see the result in the 'Personal->Self' gallery? ;-)

hmm well i did take a lot, i think it was usually more like 50 cm from my eyes, but i at least did it a few different days (and quite a few pictures). i may have had a couple closer ones too. well I think I'm fine, lol.

I think it's a liability issue. They don't want anyone holding the camera's flash right up to their eye and then suing the company for vision loss. Unless you hold the flash half an inch from your eye, you'll be fine.

did that to my brother once.....hehe......pressed the 'test' button while shoving it right infront of his face from behind.....hehe......he's still alright, but i probably wont do it again, he is my younger bro, but certainly not little bro, and the consequences were probably more damaging to me than to him:P

I think the risk it that you would have the flash reflect off of a surface in the scene and then come back through the view finder. The lenses in the view finder could then focus the flash directly onto a small part of the retina. If you aren't looking through the view finder (use the LCD instead) you should be fine.

thanks for all the input everyone. My vision doesn't seem any different (it's already bad as is anyway) so I'm sure you all are right and I'm fine. <BR> And your poor brother d spin :p

ya, id agree with Will. That is in there just as "don't touch the blade while moving" is in the manual of a saw. It's only a liability thing.
