Famous Artist Wallpapers

What would be the restriction, if any, for making wallpapers out of well known works of art and posting them? (eg: Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer) Is this something that would be allowed if the proper credit was given? I know that there are several well known works of art that I am fond of and would love to have as a desktop wallpaper. Would this go against the goal of the site?

I can see that it might not be the best idea to post these images under your regular username, as they do not belong to you personally. Maybe a gallery for "Famous Artists" or something to that effect that could seperate them from personal works. Again, this may not be something that is feasable or even desired for the site. Just a thought that popped into my head while looking around today.

Great idea, haven't a clue about the answer though! Would certainly be interested if this took off. Maybe you should upload a Van Gogh and see if anyone notices:)

# Images

* Only upload images which you have full intellectual property or fair use rights to or which are in the public domain.
* Public domain images (such as from NASA) should state the source of the images in the image description.
* Image content should be in adherance to the NTV* code.
* Unacceptable subject matter for images such as pornography, nudity, wildlife copulating, registered trademarks, copyrighted logos, copyrighted characters, celebrities, screenshots of games, frames from a movie or television show, or pointless snapshots will be rejected.
* Voting on images should be based on each image's quality and not the image's author. Regularly up-voting a specific user's images will not be tollerated.

Copy-paste from code of conduct:-)

Found a few quotes about the public domain:

1) According to the intellectual property lawyer Ivan Hoffman: "if a work was published on or before December 31, 1922, then it is likely to be in the public domain. But you should never rely solely on this date alone since there may be other factors to consider."

2) To complicate the issue, the art world is known for its complexities, there are works of art which are considered in the public domain. This phrase, "in the public domain," simply means that the image is so well known that it is within the scope of most people's general knowledge base.

Does this mean it depends on the individual piece?

From your post above, I would assume it depends on the individual image. That is the best bet. Personally, I think all public domain images should not be acceptable to post here.

I do know that there are several wallpapers currently on this site that would fall into this public domain category. It looks like someone within the powers that be has already created Vincent Van Gogh and M.C. Escher as "authors" here. So, I guess I'm wondering if those images should be left to the "powers that be" to provide.

How do you know that Van Gogh and Escher didn't upload the works?
