In addition to voting, providing a comment when you vote at either extreme (e.g. 9-10 or 1-2) also helps to make sense of individual and average voting results. Voting a '1' on an image that is averaging out around 80 does 2 things - it distorts the average vote and it provides no useful indication relating to the "out-of-average" voting score.

This site can handle useful feedback (even negative opinions or votes, if they are back up with logic and insight). Most of the contributors spend a lot of time preparing and enhancing their work prior to submission. Thoughtful 'negative feedback' would be appreciated.

The growing body of work on this site is a true testament to Caedes (and his wonderful team) and to the dedicated and thoughtful contributors. Personally, I would love to have 'off the cuff' and disparaging votes (1-2) that are provided with no feedback treated as "comments from the peanut gallery". If you can't count beyond two and can't provide a logical and sensible comment - then "keep your vote to yourself" .. and in future maybe the site might consider helping out in that regard.

Please feel free to comment on this post - sorry ... you can't vote 1 or 2.

Agree with both of you. Vote, please, but vote sensibly. I've been wondering whether to suggest a small amendment to the voting mechanism so the lowest and highest votes are ignored when calculating the average, as happens in some sports. What do you think?

Thanks for the feedback guys .
I didn't think anybody was going to respond.I personally don't leave a comment because Iam a man of few words and even less knowledge when it comes to photography. It's nothing personal.
However when I download someones pics I really think that they are great pics in my eyes and will vote on every one.
My voting scale runs from 7 to 10 only.I am not a critic or an expert just a wannabe photographer....lol have a great weekend guys.

On the subject of using 'high' votes to cancel out the 'low' votes ...

I considered that originally, but part of me rebels at the idea of wasting those 'high' votes to flush out the 'low' votes. After much consideration, I propose the following:

A voting scale appears under the picture in the member's Caedes Control panel. Voting options - 10 through 0 run from left to right, with a count of voting results underneath each score. Each member can now see how many '9' votes, '8' votes, etc. If the member see 1 or 2 '0' or '1' votes, they can now use their own discretion to "rejigger" the average.

This doesn't solve the problem of 'mangled' Ratings and c-index scores, but at least you can now see that the "true consensus" was an average rating of 83 (for example).

I started using AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) about 6 years ago. Back then it was a nice place to visit and spend time with friends across North America, Europe and Australia. Today, Net Bots, porn merchants and aspiring 'booters' have transformed it into an internet cesspool. I think we need to support Caedes, his team and serious members to ensure that this pathetic result is not repeated here and that members' works are accorded the recognition they deserve.

I think that would be a great idea!

I would still like to see a more detailed rating system where you vote on a couple different things like color, composition, ect, and get an average from that or soemthing along that lines.
