I purchased "Winged Migration" a while back - and the photography is stunning. Another good one is David Fortney's "Timeless - A National Parks Odyssey" and "Earthscapes."
I rented this, per your recommendations. Not only was it a beautiful movie, but the "making of" special features for both the film and the music were fascinating as well (on the DVD version). The creators described this film as neither fiction nor a documentary, just a story. It's a good one. Incidently, if the film itself makes you a little sad, the "making of" is a good way to cheer up. Although, you're not sad at the end of the film any way, there are just a few parts where the reality of nature is portrayed in a way that is less than cheerful :).
I just wanted to add my recommendation to the pile.
