recently i upgraded my home computer (dual 2.0 G5 [my baby]), to 10.4 and bought a copy of CS and quark 6, i haven't had anything to complain about.. yet..
has anyone tried to make a CMYK post script file on tiger yet?.. it can't be done!
it only creates chopped up RGB pdf's comprised of images and ICC profiles.. this is completely useless to a print designer!!! whats the point of having adobe distiller, if you can't even get a proper post script to put into distiller?..
ahh, hate mail has already been sent to adobe and apple.. those bastards..
I havent printed a postscript from Tiger yet but its turning out to be a mine field of problems and both my macs are due for a reinstall as they have degenerated into a mess of constant restarts and spinning beachballs from hell.....
If you have a large font library DO NOT use font book in tiger - save yourself the heartache and stump up the cash for suitcase.
Oh and Epson dont support Tiger currently for their products despite having over 18 months to get it ready which kind of shafts me with my Epson Wide Format Proofer, Epson Perfection Scanner and Epson Laser and Photo Printers. The epson website just says they should work using panther drivers (they dont) and if they dont use Gimp drivers which will (unless your using postscript and then they dont either)
I asked around for you at a client’s today and the save as Postscript option is now tucked away in the save PDF as Postscript in the PDF button on the print dialog box. Don’t know why because this doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with PDF. Anyways tried it with several hi res Adobe files and it created perfect separated CMYK postscripts that made it through their digital QC department so all appeared well. Hope this helps.
thanks phil, actually..it turned out to be the post script driver i was using.. as for font management, i did just bite the bullet and buy font agent, and as for printers.. umm.. i don't have a printer yet :/
so is a humble email on its way to Adobe/Apple retracting any previously sent vitriol or is it just a case of they probably deserve the odd slagging off anyways? :-)
eh, i haven't thought of recalling that yet, let them assume the worst
adobe's got a couple of things i mentioned about acrobat 7 they need to follow up on.
if you edit a picture with photoshop CS2, it drops the coordinates as well as the image mask. which really sucks for press adjustments
Adobe are normally quite good at taking on board criticism and they constantly monitor the user forums looking for problems. I remember when a couple of us at work discovered a flaw in their colour display algorithms in Photoshop 7.5 we posted it on a user forum and 4 hours later Chris Cox (Adobe's colour guru) was on the blower to us trying to find out what had gone wrong. Granted the fix they came up for it for future releases was a real botch job but at least they tried.
well, i've posted a couple of times to their forums about these issues, so maybe i'll hear something back; it makes it quite a pain in the arse to make adjustements to images before outputting for the presses. i have to jump computers when i have a ton of images to adjust. most of our customers don't get the dot gain idea, nor do they have any concept of 4/c black's being a problem for registration. i've often wondered, is there any prepress department out there that doesn't have to worry about how bad their customer files are? where everything comes it just as spec'd and color falls where color should be?.. maybe thats just a dream..
we got close with a customer recently who supplied lovely splt layerd tiffs of their full pack scans in six colours unfortunately they weren't very economical with layers and were under the impression that if you moved something off the visible artboard it disappeared and didnt contribute to the file size. the result? 4.5GB scans...
p.s. finally got round to wiping my mac and reinstalling everything sans font book and all is peachy once again :-)
ha, i'm workin on a freelance project that translating english to spanish, for children's comic books. its pretty easy, but i've run into the stupidest things such as a font that they wanted to use for all the dialog, didn't have accent marks nor foreign exclamation. all of their photoshop files are layered, and can't be saved with any compression. and when i'm done with an issue, i have to upload it to their ftp site, and it takes about 2 hrs to upload.
while at work i've been given the crappy PC pagemaker jobs and have been fighting with spot colors and artwork that has been posted from corel draw (*EGAD!!!*)
Using the save as postscript pdf option. One particular job has gone into our system with lo res images, although the images are fine. Other jobs have gone through successfully. Is there anyone out there that knows where we can check the settings of the save pdf to postscript?
It seems as though your initial problem is solved...for now. I have had success using some 3rd party software for Adobe Acrobat. I know it's not exactly the problem you were having but Quite A Box of Tricks might be useful when sending client-provided PDFs straight to press. It's also great when proofing out low res PDFs to clients with the 'shrink' feature. Also, Enfocus Pitstop has been a lifesaver when conversion from PDF to Postscript or Illustrator fails. It allows for some editing of the PDF and global changes to color, text, fonts, images, etc. I hope this helps. I know how frustrating it can be.

I'm about to toot me own horn here, if you don't wanna see the bragging CLOSE THIS THREAD IMMEDIATELY.
I am that rare designer who actually understands prepress and press requirements. Any job you receive from me will have all photos color corrected, they will all have the correct dpi, and they will all be cmyk w/the color profile embedded. My docoments will have the bleed setup, nothing important will be outside the safety margins. Fonts will either be embedded or provided w/the job. I even know how to make *gasp* printer spreads… and section my pages…
My print broker loves me… 90% of the time when there's a problem it is not from my end, and he's told me repeatedly "you're the only one I never have a problem with your jobs"
I am so good that I embarrassed my former company when I freelanced a job for them about a year after I had quit. I did a 64 page catalog, and when the proofs came back there was a slight margin problem… apparently nobody @ the company was adjusting for creepage, so the press guys did it automatically not knowing I had already done it. Comment from former boss "By making us look good, you made us look bad". I still snicker over that one from time to time.

easy for you, Les, .. I lost out on Hop On Pop ... all because of my big mouth .. er .. keyboard
(*keith steps forward to hit his mark, just as a single spotlight illuminates him .. and the rest of the stage falls into darkness*)
(*begin soliloquy*)
a keyboard which I didn't have to order separately .. because I didn't buy a MAC .. which, heretofore, has been represented on this site, nay, the world, as PERFECT ... but let a few disgruntled users who are out of reach of Steve Jobs' whacking stick ...
(*lights come up*)
(*Theatre manager steps forward*)
"We're sorry .. Steve Jobs has just purchased the theatre .. this performance has been cancled"
PARDON ME… me and my mac get along perfectly fine. most days. and the keyboard came w/it. I just had to buy extra keyboards for well… my own clumsiness.
I don't appreciate the overpricedness of the accessories, and the fact that certain major players in the net world treat us mac users like 2nd & 3rd class citizens (in YaHoo!'s case, we're 4th class citizens), but I continue to suffer because A) Navigation is easier B) for the processing power, the cost of the actual machine isn't that expensive, only the add-ons are (you want me to pay $60 for a microphone, r u NUTS?) and C) I know where to "acquire" the programs I use for this platform.
Keep it up and I'll throw the bowl of popcorn @ u next… and u still have to clean it up 8•P
Ok, now I am confused ... and don't wish to start another thread to seek clarification, but ... how did the chronology of the posts get ... er, 'mixed up' (for lack of a better suited term for the 'G' audience) ?
Let's see if the big hand is on the 12, and the little one is after that ... ???
Orrrr ... is this some kind of MAC voodoo thingy?
(p.s. I make mention of this to serve our beloved webmaster and the good denizens of caedes.net, in case there is, in fact, something amiss.)
Ok, back up ... hmm, to your onstage soliloquy and then proceed forward ... I note the times and the postees as presented in chronological order:
02/24/06 1:14 AM - purmusic
02/24/06 1:23 AM - KEIFER
02/24/06 12:44 AM - animaniactoo <------ something rotten in the state of caedes.net, no?
02/24/06 12:59 AM - KEIFER <------ and again?
In fact, when I have received PM's from those across the pond, I have noticed a time discrepancy there, too. I do believe. My thoughts there, were ... ok, they are time-stamped locally or something like that, lol. But, you are on the coast and Cat is in NY, NY. So, a glitch then?
Well .. none of my time stamps match yours .. so .. buy a house in the SFO bay-area and give yourself a week to get acclimated and then log into caedes
mac help thread (*snicker*) .. 02/23/06 10:23 PM ... KEIFER
(*lobs water balloon*) .. 02/24/06 9:44 AM .... animatedtaco
this was the date change for me ... new yorkers need copious amounts of beauty rest .. you know how style conscience they are
*has finger poised over the "One Button Checkup" in Norton's SystemWorks Premier*
Oh, I wanna clean out my registry ... but, first, I have to install Microsoft's NET.Framework and then familarize myself with Ghost 9.0 and ensure that it is backwards compatible with the previous image created with another version and and and and ... hmm, tomorrow should be a good day to have another pc meltdown, methinks.
Just remembered, I think there is an option for doing 'windows' as well, in the Symantec software ... *winks/giggles/grins/ ... all of the above*
Ok, it is my time now ... *bows out of the thread* ...
Hey .. Les .. what do you have in your timezone dealie on your profile page .. I think you're straight north of Plum Possum Puddin Tennessee .. so same time zone ..
just jiggle the jerry-rigged doo-hickey till it stops running ... it's wasting water
Lololol. Hmm, works for my toilet, I don't see why it shou ...
Time Zone 1 - seems to match up ok.
And I actually did a drive-by, sort of, kind of, myself ... as the times that I posted a few back ... well, they have changed ... and they're still not right, lol. I was going to share this, once again and ... uhm, I thought maybe you would think I was ... well, 'special.'
Oh, and taking screen captures and posting them under Abstract Images was another brainstorm. Ok, let's go to the new tote board ... Ed! Roll those numbers! :
02/24/06 1:14 AM - purmusic
02/24/06 1:23 AM - KEIFER <--------------- the jump between this one and then ...
02/24/06 11:44 AM - animaniactoo <------ ... this one caught my eye first
02/24/06 11:59 AM - KEIFER
Oh, and btw ... lolololol, the times? Well, back and forth between a few pages, refresh a couple of times, annnnddd now ... Ed! You made a mistake and now Jerry's Kids have to go to work to payoff your mistake!!
They have reverted to the original bad times. Ohh well, this is probably one of those things. Oh, oh ... gtg ... the short bus is here!! And we are going on a field trip!! Yay!!!!
(p.s. What determines the time stamp on the postings? Is it a function of the site's servers, as a for instance? Some combination of my own pc and the relayed packet, ahhh, better stop ... getting in over my head here. Just curious.)
(*points*) .. ^^^^^^^^ .. he made me do it, or else
What that 'else' was ... I don't want to know ... I mean look at those eyes, eyes of a stone cold ... uhm, like ice ... er, he's tricky, I'm tellin' ya!
