I've noticed that alot of people use Adobe Photoshop here on Caedes, so I went to there site to see if I could get it. To my suprise, it was a whopping 600 dollars! Is there a toned-down free version that I am not aware of? I mean, have all of the people who use it on this site forked over $600, just to edit and create images?

There is a striped-down version called "Photoshop Elements." You can get a good price reduction the full version of Photoshop if you qualify for a educational discount.

Not only is it expensive, but Adobe has become very protective and won't let you put it on more than two computers. My work is on computers and I use photoshop on at least three computers. I got the latest upgrade for about $150 and tried to put it on those computers. It wouldn't let me. I called Adobe to complain...but they weren't sympathetic, telling me that I'd have to go out and buy another upgrade if I wanted to put it on a third computer. I complained to two or three levels of supervisors to no avail. ):

I think it is totally understandable from their perspective. They make the program for professionals: professionals who can easily make $1000 or more by working with the program for a few hours. If they wanted to be 'nice' and sell the program for much less to non-profit users, then they would have a serious problem with professionals purchasing it at the lower price.

Google search for Gimp 2.2 It's FREE. I used Gimp for awhile before I got my hands on Adobe Photoshop. It's (arguably) just as good as photoshop for editing photos. You should try it. =0)

I would also recommend the GIMP. I've used it for about two years now. I've often had the chance to see and feel the differences between the two, and there are truly not that much. Especially not $400+ worth. Best of all it's open source (big stuff for geeks like me).

*falls over at price* I think Photoshop was bundled with the computer we had. I can't imagine my dad forking out that much money for a programme. It also had Paint Shop Pro 7. We've changed computers and just reloaded the programmes on.

Most software companies selling pro grade programs like photoshop would only let you legally install it on one machine so it's hardly fair to accuse Adobe of being tight by them letting you install CS2 twice when you have only paid for one seat. would you whine at an airline check in desk if they didnt let your three friends travel with you sat on your lap for free? No? Thought not.

It makes sense to me that Photoshop is expensive...NOT because of WHO it's sold to but because of what it does... it is, indeed, worth the money, IMHO, though it is quite a chunk for nonprofessionals or prosumers. I do video editing out of my home and the cost of good editing software is awesome, but somebody has to develop these programs and we're paying, in part, for their complexity and development.

As for Adobe only allowing these products on a couple of computers, as I told Adobe, it is ME who is USING the product on three different computers, NOT someone else. It's like me switching seats on the airplane, NOT expecting three seats for the price of one. BTW, when I spoke with Adobe about my concerns in this regard, they understood my beef perfectly and I was told that they have received a multitude of calls about the same problem. (Previous versions did not limit installations the way the new version does.) I was told that I could work around the problem somewhat by DISABLING Photoshop temporarily on one computer, so that I could install and work with Photoshop on the third computer. So, I need to remember to disable my version on my main computer before I travel 50 miles to the office where my third computer is stationed. I understand that they are trying to prevent people from allowing others to use the software without purchasing it but that is not what I am doing.

I for one believe the price of Photoshop is totally unreasonable.. I fully understand what they are trying to do, and I sympathize, but not when it comes to my ability to ever own the program.. I drool over images worked in photoshop.. I would love to own it, but its' price is forever our of my ability to pay.. I love the programs I have, but they will not do what photoshop will do.. This will always keep me on the lower end of the editing scale.. Somewhere there needs to be an alternative, that will give me the same chance as those who can afford photoshop....

I understand your point of view as im sure Adobe do as well. However, they are in the business of making money and although your intentions are honest they have based this decision on people being allowed to have one copy that works both at home and in the office. Not many people would need any more than that. You are correct - if you are connected to the net you can deactivate/reactivate the license quite easily.

I think technically most software is like this,I think they want you to buy a license for each computer that you install it on.One good thing is a lot software companies give a discount for multiple licenses.I thought you could install the CS versions of Photoshop on several machines and transfer the license around between them.As far as Photoshop being worth the money like Caedes mentioned above you can make the price of the software back and then some in a very short time,so I would have to say it is very worth what they are asking.I have seen older versions of Photoshop on E-bay at almose give away prices,so if you dont have to have the latest version you might be able to pick it up for under 100 bucks.

CS2 allows you to install on 2 machines as you have to activate the install on the web. to install it on more than that you must deactivate at least on of your installs before doing this. you dont have to uninstall/reinstall everytime you do this as far as im aware.

Even $100.00 is way to much for me.. My income is $387.00 per month.. I am not able to work due to illnes, that still puts me out out the running.. Besides I am not sure I want to buy anything from e-bay, as everytime I have tried to, I have gotten ripped off.. The only ones I have seen are from Germany and I don't speak or read German.. I understand that they are in it to make money All business are.. I had my own business for 13 years.. That is not the point.. It is just too expensive for the average person..If it is for professionals then they should state tha,t and not sell to anyone else..

and the first line of the product description for Photoshop CS2 on Adobe's website would be:

"The professional standard in desktop digital imaging. Adobe® Photoshop® CS2 software, the professional image-editing standard and leader of the Photoshop digital imaging line, delivers more of what you crave."

I think they are staking their claim in a specific market sector quite clearly there.

They do not restrict sales to professionals..

I dont know of anyone who restricts the sales of their software or equipment to 'professionals' as its hard to quantify what one really is.

will Photoshop elements not do? Adobe often incorporate a lot of the features from previous versions of photoshop into elements. for instance, the elements 3 contains many new features preiously seen in Photoshop CS.

The "discount for multiple licenses," as tbob mentioned, is the answer, and that's what I suggested to Adobe. I said I'd be more than willing to pay a lesser fee to purchase a license key for a third or fourth computer, but wasn't turned on about the idea of going out and purchasing another disk at full price. That isn't an option with Adobe, however.

I will say this...when there's a will there's a way when it comes to being "artistic." It's not so much what tools you use, though you need a few basic tools to work with - - It's what you DO with them. You can have all the best tools available, but that doesn't guarantee good art.........Wen

ok how about this option then - buy ANY older legitimate version of photoshop (you should be able to get one really cheap) and you can but a full version upgrade to CS2 from Adobe for only $149.

legitimate boxed and sealed versions of PS7 can be bought form dealers for as little as $49 whereas something as recent as PS CS1.1 can be had for less than a $100 if your not bothered about CS2

I dont think he was saying that Adobe is trying to restrict the sale of there products to Pro's only,I think he was saying that is the market photoshop is aiming for.You might be able to get it cheaper than 100 bucks I was just saying that because I have seen version CS on there for that. You might beable to get 6 or 7 cheaper.Right now as I type I see that there are a couple auctions with version 7 for sale one of them is 55 bucks and the other is 45 bucks. There seems to be 9 or more pages about Photoshop so there may even be more for sale in this range. There is also several Element 2.0 for under 20 bucks.

you can buy a sealed OEM/bundled disc set for PS 7 for less than $50 from many online software sales outlets. you dont get product support with OEM's but you do qualify for upgrade pricing discounts.

:-O **slaps head in frustration....**

whilst it is true to say that 7 is more transparent in its ease of use it pales into insignificance next to the latest version. I wouldn't say that CS1 was that much of a leap but 2 is quite a large step forward. once you've found all its hidden benefits.
