Voting and commenting together

Is it possible to be able to vote and comment together, then upload. Or is there a technical glitch that makes this impossible. If this question has been asked before and answered, sorry. Cheers Al.

Yes, I too have wondered this...it would be great if it were possible because as it stands now, to go back and comment later is much more time consuming and possibly the reason why the comments seem to be down lately.

In the voting booth it shows you links to the images you have recently voted on. If you feel compelled to comment, it can be done then. Given that the images are random and limited per day to a maximum number, I would think that most comments you leave will be on images that you have sought in the galleries, rather than happened upon in the voting booth.

Is that what you meant?

Thats how I think it should be. You can't save an image with out voting and making a remarks. You should not be able to click and enlerge with out this. This way you will stay on that images page and have to vote and comment if you trully want it. When you click on an image enlarging a note should come up that say's you need to do this before you can.

I think the commenting should be available but optional. If we force people to comment, they may become resentful, but making it optional would allow more people to comment. I know I would comment more frequently.

Yes, I know there are 10 links that show up AFTER I have voted but since the images are not titled, I can't tell from the links which ones I felt compelled to comment on and I don't necessarily want to comment on all of them...and yes, I too feel that if commenting were available during the voting session, it should strictly be optional, not mandatory.:Pat.

Well, frankly, I agree with your reasoning, Reg, but I think it also holds for forcing people to vote on images they don't want to vote on. Forced voting and commenting make it a CHORE rather than a opportunity, and I think it effects the attitude of the voter. Nonetheless, Caedes.net wants a system in which all images get an equal number of votes (however, the actual quality/reliability of those votes is currently suspect because of the wide variation of scores on many images.) That's pretty diffucult unless people are forced to vote in a random manner on a certain number of images. I think requiring them to vote AND comment on a significant number of images daily would result in a significant exodus out of Caedes.net. The more incentives we can give people to vote and comment VOLUNTARILY the better, IMHO, and I'm hoping Caedes finds a way to figure SELECTIVE/voluntary votes into the equation that now only includes randow votes. ...

In other words - let us get back to what we had before - IT WAS NOT BAD !!!!!!! I mean what we had originally, say in 2004 when I joined. I enjoyed every second on the net. At that time it was exchanging ideas, suggestions and advice or just having fun. What was wrong with us then ?

All I meant was is it possible that when you vote and WANT to comment that you can do it at the same time. I just thought that it would be quite convenient. Cheers Al.

i like this system- and think it will work out well. Commenting isn't hard- when I see somethign interesting when I'm voting- I enjoy going and commenting- and sometimes posting what I gave for a score. Image names could be abused- though for some works it does help explain the context.

I find it interesrting when I have image of mine that have 349 down loads out of 437 veiws but only 3 votes. That should tell you the reason images are removed from the site. With out votes they have no merit. That's why voting should be manditory.

"Without votes they have no merit?" I thought that the number of downloads was also a consideration as to whether an image graduated to the permanent galleries. It all depends on what moderators are looking at when they decide which images to cut and which images to keep. I've seen a number of images on the permanent galleries with relatively low C-indexes. Seems that is only ONE consideration.

Marzena, many of us agree with you about liking the way it was. Unfortunately there were some people here who would not let go of the c-index. Thus it became so important that people began to resent others who had high scores when their own were falling. Caedes had to do something about it. This is why we are where we are

The links now replaced with thumbnails at the end of the voting is much better...at least it helps to know where to find the images you wanted to comment on...so, thanks caedes for that.:Pat.

I find the comment that “without votes they have no merit” to be odd because the value of the vote depends on the quality of the voter and their attitude. They might be stabbing any ol number to get the chore out of the way or voting low out of spite. On the other hand a comment is nearly always thought about and carefully written because the author of the comment was moved by the image to take the time and make the effort required to make the comment.

I agree with Pat that having links in the voting booth is a huge improvement. Well done Caedes for that one.

I think Prism was just implying that such a low number of votes compared to views implies that there was little interest from members regarding the image. It wouldn't be a consideration when deciding whether to move the image though Clay.

I wasn’t taking a shot at Clay and respect his point of view. I was merely putting forth my point of view on the matter. I wouldn’t remove an image quickly because of a low vote but a lack of comments could see it disappear very quickly indeed.
