You can't go wrong with any camera's by Canon. If you are after a DSLR then you should be able to afford a Canon Digital Rebel XT for around $900.00

FujiFilm cameras are worth looking into also, a lot of bang for the buck.

If you want IS and lots of zoom you are right; the S2 will do you fine. From what i have seen about that camera it is very good. I don't think that would be a bad pick. But then again i don't know much about the cameras in that range.

I used a Panasonic Lumix for a year. It has an amazing Leica lens that has an aperture range from 2.8 - 8 all the way through its 12 power optical zoom (40-160mm equivalent). It is available up to 6MPX resolution, and costs a lot less than a DSLR.

Meant to post here awhile ago... I actually have the S1, predecessor to the S2. If you want long zoom and IS, probably your best bets are the Canon S2 or Panasonic FZ20. They're quite similar in image quality, both 5mp and 12x, but both have some features the other doesn't. Ideally, you could go to a store and handle them both to see what you like better. The S2 is reasonably compact as I understand it, only slightly bigger than the S1 I have. The FZ20 is a fair amount bigger, almost appearing as a DSLR. My friend has one (had to one-up me :-D ) and it takes great pics.

The thing about the Panasonic is it's incredible lense. This lense should cost over $1,000, given its light characteristics, but somehow Panasonic makes money selling the whole camera for about $500. If you go through my gallery, almost everything I shot last year and this were from the Panasonic, and I only had the 4mpx FZ10.
