This is the designated forum for feedback concerning the automatic comment request feature. It comes in the form of a "Job" that asks you to make a comment on a specific image that was recently uploaded but has yet to receive many comments. We are currently doing limited tests of this feature, so you may or may not see the comment request yourself.
The beer urges me on, the bewitching beer, which sets even a wise man to singing and to laughing gently and rouses him up to dance and brings forth words which were better unspoken.

I think this automated comment request is a fantastic idea. I think comments are the best show of appreciation for a picture. feedback is the most constructive "thank you" whether good or bad.
I don't mind the comment request at all. I also understand the need for the voting booth. We'll get these things refined in time. I think the request may serve me well when I post an image that nobody notices...and it happens.
The more I am able to give on comments, the more I learn too. I am sticking with caedes because they DO try and even tho many are creatures of habit...remaining openminded is such a great tool. We can shovel into our little "brain sponges"...and just absorb....the comment request is a great plus for caedes..."three cheers!!!"...........V
Its certainly a good idea, it builds up the caedes community. It can only encourage people to speak up. I took to an image I wouldnt usually browse at.
It's a positive incentive.

Well I have just been asked to comment on "Legend of the truth", this is mine anyway so bit tough Im my own worst critic so would find it a bit tough etc, Are these automated comment requests chosen @ random?
Yes, there is about a chance of getting your won image as a comment request becasue I've not added in a check for that. I'll add it when I can find some time. Thanks.
Is there any way that a check could be added in so that you dont get a comment request for one you have already commented in because this has happened 2ce so far and it isnt that it is annoying... more that i would rather able to use the comment request better to help benefit people without much feedback on their image... because i know it is something i look for the most is someone giving me feedback on how to better my images
Wow, so many comments and so little time for me to read them all! I just wanted to say that I think this is a great idea espescially for the little known artists. This is a way to make sure that they don't fall thru the cracks of feedback! I am honored to help out when I can!!
Bang bang, I shot you down bang bang , you hit the ground bang bang.
Wicked feature especially when you have to think out of the box when you comment on work you dont do yourself, 2 of my last 3 have been on fractals.....? It's been ok.
I like this automatic request for comment. It helps to get comments to works that might not be very interesting, but where the poster needs comment to help grow. i"ve found some pretty nice images that I would have missed. I'm also appauled at the low c index on some pretty fine images. What are people thinking. Are people giving low scores because they resent having to vote before posting??? I wonder. We can't see, to win on these issues.
Believe it or not, I received anautomated comment request to comment my own work. :) I don't mind to say what I think for my picture, but it's more important to me to hear what the other artists think about it.
I received automated comment request, I always look at the work, But if its not my kind of art I just don't comment , I like to comment on things I like, and don't feel its fair to comment on things I don't like.
Well that is not very sporting, broaden your horizons. We all have so much to learn from each other opinionation is for the weak willed and selfish among us. Yet again a fractal for me.....???? But It's forcing me to think so keep up the auto's for me. Cheers Nik.
Jeez! I've been getting about four "comment requests" a day! I"m fine with the feature as I seldomly do go around the galleries and comment. This allows you to give your honest oppinion on things which I really like. Good Job on that!
Danita
I think that it is only possible to get 3 comment requests a day, but that is still very unlikely since it only gives them to a (hopefully random) small sample of the total caedes population. Fir instance I've only receive one a few days ago. I'll check the system to make sure that it isn't sorting the usernames alphabetically or anything similarly silly.
I quite like the comment requests, they sometimes drag me out of my comfort zone and have me scratching my head but it’s all good comment practice and doesn’t take much time.
since i have been commenting on people's work, it seem that i have been getting more and more comment requests per day. At first i got like 1 every other day.... now i got like 2 in a couple of hours....
It just picks people at random without reguard to whether or not you've commented in the past. I've not receive a request in a few days. Luck of the draw so to speak.
I like the idea, as I don't mind checking out random images, hoping one of them will really strike me and if it means a great image will make it to the permanent gallery, great! in the past i've had a few of my personal favourite images that i've posted not make it to the permanent gallery because not enough people voted or commented...so if this helps in gaining those CRUCIAL initial votes..Great!
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king. - JRR Tolkien (The Fellowship of the Ring)
I don't think so .. I would rather recieve no comments, than some of the ones I have been getting.. I have had my share of bad in my life.. I really don't need anymore... My attitude it if you don't like it leave it alone..
If you don't want comments then the only opion is to not upload. Complaining when someone provides critical commentary which is counter to your opinions is contrary to one of the main purposes of this site.
Dum dum dum another one bites the dust. It's all gravy. I like it as it pushes me to really think about pieces I would not normally choose to look "AT" & provide my "OPINION" instead of skirting away from pieces I simply "JUST DONT LIKE" should the world of Caedes become flexible and empathatic, nope as where would people with different muse's get an opinion from a completely different genre of work. For me Apophysis pretty much does the work for you then it's down to the quality of the render however recently I uploaded a piece of photography I was very happy with, soft lolita effect and god capture of movement without blur, concidering this was a heavy night out I did really very well. Now instead of an entity not thinking about the piece and providing sound and solid advice that im used to it went into the pit of "contravercial" and with no reason why. If people such as above cant think outside of the box and comment on work they dont like and as a consequence rally to get it binned it seems a little harsh as being 26, red blooded male what do you think my inspirations are.
I would of liked an aoutomated comment request feature so people could provide sound advice technically and opinion seperatley. Did not work out that way though.
No it hasn't.. If I were getting truly constructive help I would not be posting here. What I am getting it foolishness and not in the least helpful.. What it is doing is putting comment requests, to people who have know real knowlege of photography or fractals, and nothing that they have to say is useful..
Beavis and Butthead once said .. "In order to have stuff that's cool you have to have stuff that sucks" .. and, strangely, great men and women throughout history have stolen that line from them and then jimmied the dates to look as though they said it first. Which ever way the court ruling goes, when the dust settles, the base truth of that will be upheld
you appreciate the caviar because you've had vegemite before
You speak wisely Keith! And so apparently did Beavis and Butthead. ^_^ Truth is spoken by drunkards, fools and children it is said. I'm part of the fools category in some respects I guess... ^_^
Yeah, Apophysis really does all the work for you. That is, of course, if you want it done poorly. I really think Apophysis has alot of untapped potential, it just seems that alot of people don't really look for it.
Uh, oh, getting offtopic. As for the automated request feature, i'm all for it. Some honest (even harsh) feedback is better than none at all.
I'm a little late to the discussion here. Most of you don't know me, I found this site 3 or 4 months ago and have been completely in love w/it. My desktop rotates images every 1/2 hour, and alot of them have come from this site.
I'm the senior computer artist @ my company, which means that A) By the time I get home, the last thing I wanna do is draw, but I do have a couple of images in my head that I'll get out someday and post, and B) I give critique all day long. I have been a freeloader for far too long here, and have no issues with being asked to give useful criticism on an image when I come on. (actually, I like it, it makes me feel less guilty).
Samatar gave an excellent definition of how to give positive feedback. Coach things in an "I like", "in my opinion", "i think that" manner. 2 likes for a dislike is an excellent balance. Even if you end up with 1 like and 2 dislikes, be gentle. You want to leave the poster feeling they have positive encouragement to improve their images and keep posting.
For those who feel they don't know how to find what they like, here are a few things you can look at specifically. Are there particular colors you enjoy? The palette of colors used? The contrast? The way an image is cropped or framed? What objects are central/focused in the image? The evocative mood of the image? One of the big things people miss with photography is the way the image is framed and or lit. These are the biggest choices a photographer makes. Moving a shot 2 inches to the left, or moving in closer or widening up create different overall impressions when you look @ a photo, so think about how you would feel if the shot was framed differently. Lighting evokes moods, so do you like the way this was done? or would u like to see more contrast? maybe you'd like to see the lighting coming from a different direction?
Now that I've written a book here, I'll give one last opinion and go away. I'm sorry that people have given you bad critiques Morwyn. One of the things that i've loved about this site is that people are encouraged to keep improving. Not everybody who comments will know what they're talking about, but alot of people out there who don't "know the rules" do appreciate art & photography, and can give you feedback on things that you wouldn't have thought of, maybe because it's not where you were going with that image. Read what they have to say, consider it, if you disagree, reject it and keep on going. That being said (this appears to be the postscript to the book here), I totally agree that if you come across an image in your requests that is outside a range of art that you like, or you feel like you cannot honestly offer USEFUL critique, you should shut it down and go away.
*waves* ty everybody for all the great art I've gotten from here.
Now, I'm itching to see some of your work here. I'll bookmark your "user information" page and come back once every week from now. ;) (You made me really curious of what those things might be that you felt like getting out of your head...)
I have been an artist all of my life, I honestly don't remember getting tired of creating.. Since my projects vary, if I didn't want to work on one I've worked on another.. Not want to create.. Never..
I have just commented on "Upper Yosemite Falls" this peice is quality so I advise checkin it out. Also "Nickle Plate Yard" which was also a good piece.
I think we should all spend less time arguing and more time debating about art, that might be nice lets try that instead.
I really like the comment request idea. Even if most of the pictures I've commented on could use some work, I like to think that my ideas will help the artists along the way (gotta fuel that ego, you know).
I like this feature. I would not want to be overloaded with comment requests, but this is nice since I do not have alot of time to look over all the new images. Great work Caedes. :)
What about pictures you really don't want to comment on because they're not your thing? For example, pictures of people's kids. Okay, some of them are cute, but I wouldn't use a picture of someone's kid on my computer who I didn't even know in real life. It's easier to just say nothing and vote on it, since I'm not a photography expert anyway. Besides, I don't feel that it's right to say something that might be construed as negative about a photo that's just personal anyway.
Just skip it then. I do sometimes (if it stinks so bad I see no potential in it in any way and see little room to leave some positive feedback with the comment (really, I do try doing that!^_^)). There's no obligation to comment just because you got a request. It's just that... a request. It's not an order and doesn't come with a gun to our heads, proverbial or otherwise. At least this is the way I see it.
I would point out that, while I understand their pride in sharing their children with the rest of us .. this is intended to be an ART site at best .. and a WALLPAPER site at the least and "PERSONAL" photos don't really fit in the LONG term goals
IMHO they should be stopped at an earlier point. Anyone seem to remember a snapshot policy? Sometimes I wonder if it is at work. I partly understand why the ship isn't run tighter though. I guess they just don't make it to the permanent galleries and that this is seen as enough, but I still think it litters the site...
I just came across the automated image request I had to take a long break and I think its a good thing. Although I couldn't say it was the best image I have seen it gives fair
chances to images you might pass over.I find a lot of times the preview and what lies in the full image are very decieving. I am more likely to click on an image with an appealing preview and pass the others by.
I am very happy with this change and feel it gives new artists and photographers a fair(I hope) shot and hopefuly constructive comments on how to improve their craft.
Hehe... LOL!!! (Didn't you miss a word or so in that last sentence? I got your message though...) Do you hear me whine now about the new c-index system and peoples bad and stupid criticism or how low my c-index is? There is less bias in this system as far as I'm concerned. I'm glad to you didn't get targeted by some of the "individuals" that were rampaging here in the good old times... Consider yourself lucky then. Who's whining when is probably just a point of view... ;)
You said you "never saw any of it", as in bias towards friends in Niks post above. (And that for me includes bias towards enemies.) I guess I'm still targeted too... If it gets their rocks off who am I to stand in their way? I was just confused by your finish about "just the whiners talking", and since I had a high profile earlier in a similar debate I didn't feel like being pointed out as being just another *la di da primadonna* whiner... People doesn't usually include themselves when talking bout whiners... Maybe I got you wrong?
You were never included in the whiners.. The biggest ones no longer with us and the others have quit saying anything.. It is still fairly easy to target someone in the voting booth or in comments.. It still happens, so nothing was accomplished as far as I'm concerned..
Ok, thanks. ;) I guess you are right. I've just settled for that it will not be any big change to the situation as it is atm... I guess I don't strictly speaking believe in technical solutions to problems that involve human relations in a manner of speaking...
You are right.. I have no interest in trying to change anything.. I am just to old to care much and since this is no longer the only site I post images on, I get a truer evaluation of my art.. This place is addictive and I have made many friends, so this is where I "hang out".. Also there are many young artists I do my best to help.. Even if some people don't understand what I am doing..
Wouldn't be any fun at all.. Most people don't realize I am 61 and a grandmother.. I have seen enough to know that people will nveer change, so just ride the wave.. I'm old enough to no longer be afraid o to speak out.. Not many around here my age..
True. ^_^ I wonder how I came to the same conclusion about people though. I'm only half your age. ;) I guess I must be a prodigy. :P I'm outspoken too. Man... I feel like a freak. Hehe... Just kidding. It's bedtime here in old Europa... Don't take everything I say too seriously. (But you knew that, right... ;) )
Great feature, no problem with it, but I had to laugh, I got a comment request this morning & when I linked over to the pic, somebody had already commented ...me ! So, I respectfully decline today's offering, I decided 2 comments from me were too many !
