Someone please PM me and break this down so someone with little Html knowledge can understand.I would occasionally like to put linkd in the text to show where I'mm shhoting if they have a website. Thanks!!
since we're on the topic of linking, is it possible to get that nifty program that allows us to add emoticons, like going to phpBB community? juz wondering...
How about this: I notice that some people are able to add links to their images, but when I try I get blocked with the message, "This image is no longer ..." I believe (CAEDES?) that this is to prevent people from sucking the server dry of images with bots, but what is allowing noobguy to do it but preventing me?
regmar, I believe you may be trying to link directly to the image itself (i.e. copying the shortcut from clicking on one of the sizes under the large 'thumbnail' on the image info page), so that clicking on your link would pop up the full screen preview. What I do, and I'm assuming Anthony does as well, is link to the image info page itself (i.e. copy the shortcut from the smallest thumbnail preview in a gallery window, or from the name of the image in your control panel, etc.). Then when a person clicks on the link it will take them to the image info page, not try to bring up a full screen image directly. The Caedes software happily allows links from any other page to target a page within the domain, however it rejects links that attempt to bring up any of the site's images from an improper http referrer. That means that you just need to link to the image info page, not the jpg... Hope this helps~
***EDIT***
I thought perhaps a demonstration would help clear this up.
Hmmm... I see that the invalid link works as well. Caedes, am I right in assuming that the second link would not work from outside the domain? Anyway, Regmar, the first link is the one you want :)
P.S. If you copy my links please be careful that there are no "returns" or extra spaces added or they will not work as a model.
Josh: You're correct that the prefered linking method is to the Info Page and not the big image page (actually the "ShowImage" page). Both of your links would work from outside the site because you never linked to the actual image. The last link is actually just a link to a very small html page that contains the image. It might not work in the future though.
Seems that cutting and pasting links is being discouraged, so those of us with poor memories/programming skills will need this info more than ever now...

Italic does not seem to work in Image Descriptions. :( I tried to use it when giving the scientific name for my caterpillars.....maybe I goofed, I'll go back and try again
I have a strange problem with the linking that I really don't understand. Every time I make a link the URL (including the citation signs) in the "a herf" tag disappears when I post the comment. (It doesn't matter what kind of link I make.)
If I edit the post and just adds the "URL" part again it works fine... Any thoughts? I use Safari most of the time and latest update of Panther. I could try to use IE but I rather not use that godforsaken browser... It's support for Mac OS is long gone with no new updates to come (just as well...)
I'm not sure I understand. The URL is supposed to disappear (unless you put the URL itself in the text to be linked). For example: if you put
<a href "http://www.caedes.net">Click here</a> then it would display: Click here.
But if you were to put
<a href "http://www.caedes.net">http://www.caedes.net</a> then it would display http://www.caedes.net

I understand what you mean but that is not the thing. I mean that the URL in the "a href" tag disappears. The text one see in the post is not the issue. In your example above the post would have the highlighted Click here but the link will not work and the URL text in the tag (in this example "http://www.caedes.net") would not be there if I click the edit post link and check what I just wrote. It would just be: < a href>Click here</ a> Once I put the URL in the tag again in an edit of the post it will stay put and work properly. Like I said it's a bit strange.
(I use bad tags to make them show up in the post. I'm not sure how to make the tags valid and show in text like you did in the above text. Is it because you use the < b> </ b> tag on those segments?)
Damn it worked now for the first time that I can remember. I'll have to see if I get the same problem more times or if there is something other going on.
I understand what you mean - the same thing happened when I posted a link on a comment I made.
I am 100% sure it was all there but when I checked afterwards it had gone. Bizarrely it then defaulted to http://www.caedes.net instead of the specific page. I went back and edited it and then it worked fine.

Oh, didn't see your last comment, Klas. The reason that the tags show in my post instead of the browser converting them is because I entered them as special character entities - just like if you were creating a webpage and wanted to put a'<' in the text.
So, you would put the character entity number < or the character entity name < in order to display the < without it being interpreted as a tag.

I just posted a comment with a link on. With this discussion in mind, I double-checked that it was ok and then I even pasted a copy into notepad to check against. When I posted the comment, the links (there were 2 in fact) both defaulted to http://www.caedes/net. When I went to edit it, the tag just said < a href= > (without the spaces, obviously - it just wouldn't accept the < for some reason).

That's exactly what has been happening to me all the time except in the posts above. ^_^ Actually, for me the link sends me to the same page I've posted the comment on as a default when the linking tag goes empty. (< a href= > as described above.) I thought it was because of some weird incompatibility since I'm using a rather under-represented OS. I've not heard any discussion about it earlier so I've assumed it 's not a big problem for others.
Are you able to see the way I typed the link for "Gateway to Long Lost Love-Manip.?" You will see that I had to remove that last / after jpg. within the parenthesis. If I add it back in, it will say that the image has been removed.
Piner told me to remove that a long time ago for it to work.
My problem is that the FAQ link shows up as... well, a link. It seems to change randomly between being a link and being text which I can then copy. I know a few other people have seen the same phenomena.

I'm not sure, but I think it may be that when the FAQ is edited, and not told specifically to use the lt and gt symbols, the editing software defaults them to < and > and creates a link. I've had similar trouble trying to edit/add line breaks to other things on the site.
BJ: do you mean the / after .com in asdf.com/" ? The slash is not part of the syntax for linking, it's part of the url, and that's why it's not needed. Technically, it's not needed for the url either. ;)
Hi Mike. The only way I can explain this is to lead you to my image "Gateway to Long Lost Love-Manip." If you put a slash after the jpg. (which is where it would be following the way it's typed in the FAQ's....and, if I didn't know what you just explained to me which I didn't), then click on "here", you will get the Caedes general message that the image has been deleted.
There are so many symbols in there you have to type just right that I thought the slash was a part of it. All this time, since Tom told me to just leave it out, I thought it was a Mac/PC difference. Knowing Sam just got a Mac, I thought I might have the solution. Pardon me Sam. ;0 bye...lol
I think this is what she was referring to: On a mac, if the link has "& image" in it (without the space) it changes to: "&image". So the link turns out like this: "http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=cutee_pie29-1106524341.jpg" and hence can't be used...
Here I go again, explaining something by obfuscating it... =)
The FAQ shows that:
<a href="http://asdf.com/">asdf.com</a>
the target of the link is within the parenthesis, so the target for this link is http://asdf.com/
the slash trailing asdf.com/ (<-- that one right there) is not part of link syntax, it's part of the target, and in fact usually denotes a directory (requests the index of said directory)
so for all intents and purposes,
<a href="http://asdf.com/">asdf.com</a>
is the same as
<a href="http://asdf.com">asdf.com</a>
(note the no trailing slash)
and will usually have the same result as
<a href="http://asdf.com/index.html">asdf.com</a>
The "& image problem" seems to occur with all mozilla-based browsers, so that's the default mac browser, and mozilla and firefox for windows/linux.
So what Mike is saying, BJ is that your syntax is wrong - putting a slash after the 'jpg' just doesn't make sense - it's not a valid URL.
For example, if I put
<a href="http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=CaptainHero-1092921369.jpg">Click here</a>
then it will work fine: Click here
However, if I put
<a href="http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=CaptainHero-1092921369.jpg/">Click here</a>
then it doesn't work because it is not a valid url: Click here
Why it defaults to the 'deleted image' screen I don't know - must be the way the site code works - it sees that you are trying to view an image that quite literally doesn't exist, so it directs the browser to the deleted image page.
Edit: that's odd, I had to edit my post because it was displaying all the code as links, even when I used the < and > codes. In the end I had to use numeric codes: < and >

I hate to seem like newbie nimrod but when I save the shortcut from my control panel to the image I want to link to, the link goes to Caedes homepage.????????????
I was trying to practice bold type by sending pm to myself and it wouldn't work. WHY ? ? ? ? Ok how do you stop the underline thing? I have (/i) at the end. Do I have to put another at the end? Oh I think I answered that question?
the "this" is what i wanted to do actually.. so you say i'm pretty selfish too? LOL.. but seems as if i've missed it.. i'll try again . :)
i thought mabye i've done the clicky click thingy wrong.. that's why i went to the front page instead of mine.. :))) ohhhhh.. if only i was as clever as u techie guys! what a frustration.
