I thought I might start a discussion on the currentcontest entries uploaded so far. Basically:
What are your favorite images; and which do you think are the best in terms of meeting the contest requirements (ie breaking the rules in order to create something unique but still high quality)?
Voting will be taking place before too long so I thought this might help people in deciding who will get theirs...
Not sure how the voting will be carried out this time. But I see nothing wrong with this idea, people are still free to make up their own minds. I thought it might be nice to have an artistic discussion, seeing as how some people feel that the community here is less active than it used to be. If anyone doesn't want to participate, thst's fine.
I'm not too convinced most of us members actually understand the parameters of the contest. Are we talking about really bad interpretions of fine, proven techniques, or really great interpretations of poor techniques?
The concept is pretty simple I think; the idea is to prove that a great photograph can be taken without having to always follow these rules of photography.
Personally I think giraffe by anderbre would have to be my favorite so far. For me it captures the essence of what the contest is all about; normally cutting off the head of an animal and just showing the body would result in a pretty lousy image, but in this example it forces the viewer to focus on something they might normally pay little attention too, namely the pattern and texture of the giraffe's coat. I also think this photograph is made more interesting by the contrast between the green background and the reddish brown of the coat, something that would be lost if the photographer concentrated purely on the pattern and zoomed in closer than anderbre has to cut out the surroundings. By going halfway between these two that we might normally expect, I think anderbre has captured something that I haven't seen before; and he has acheived this specifically by breaking one of the principal rules that photographers tend to live by. So this image, to my mind, is a perfect example of what entries should be aiming to acheive.
I agree, the giraffe one was a very simple but good idea forcing us to focus on the color and texture of the animal rather than its' face...(wish I'd thought of it)...I also happen to really like Face Me by Jeffo...clearly alot of rules were broken but the sense of motion you get from it and the appearance of distortion are kind of fascinating to view and with the girl herself being fairly clear, it gives the feeling that you are viewing a dream or some kind of hallucination...I find it a thought-provoking image.:Pat.
oops...double post...computer acting up...but since I'm here again, just a reminder to any who have not yet entered but would like to, the deadline is fast approaching...tomorrow night, Sunday October 30th. midnight.
Thanks Pat... besides picking my own (and i would pick Out of Place over Face Me even though i was happy with both results) i would have to say Almost There, even though it didnt break many rules i kind of like the nothingness of it... and yes i am fully aware nothingness is not a word
For me , if i could pick a winner right now it would be Conflicting Lines ; I like that it is a bit unusual , the colors work out great and all of the broken rules make it a better pic.
