i'm (hoping to) start a photography course next march and i don't have a decent camera yet, but i need to create a portfolio and have a good camera by then....
What would be a good camera to start off with and what price am i looking at for one. Digital or normal.... thanks........ :)

you may want to check with your course folks first as many still insist on you learning with a film based camera in which case you could get a Canon EOS 300X or a Nikon F75/F55 for around £150. For their digital equivalents you'll be looking at 3-4 times that price with a Canon EOS 350D or Nikon D70s/D50.

Yeah it depends on your skill. Age doesn't matter. If you're a decent photographer and you're really into it, go for a digital slr! I have a 350D. No problems. If you do get it, get the new EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro/portrait lens. It's crazy.

Most accredited photography courses will not entertain digital cameras - even very capable DSLR models - so it's important to check this first.

I have to agree with philcUK. If you don’t check with the course organisers you might end up with two cameras.

A student of photography myself, it's been my experience that even if digital is featured at a school, most programs require you to start with film (my first photo teacher required full manual cameras with a 50mm lens). Film is easier to teach to beginners because of low equipment cost, and it teaches you to depend on skill and understanding of the environment rather than on what is seen on the LCD.

Well, I think the requisite of film might soon be changing, especially since most retailers have stopped selling film based cameras. Film might be harder to come by in the future.

That said, we aren't there quite yet. As Phil said, it would be best to check what your course will require.

No to hijack the thread or anything, but can someone recommend a good digital camera to start with?

You may wish to provide a price range with your question . . . For the value, I'm kinda partial to the Canon 20D, but that's usually still out of budget for people getting started.

Ok – assuming the course says film only stick with what has already been suggested as either the Canon or Nikon unit feature the same device mounts as their digital brethren so any lenses/flashes etc you purchase can be used if you upgrade to the same brand DSLR later on. As far DSLR’s go this is the usual breakdown between the big two….

On a modest budget: Nikon D50 / Canon Digital Rebel XT

Feeling slightly more ostentatious: Canon ESO 20D / Nikon D70s

Feeling very flush: Nikon D200

Eating Beluga for breakfast?: Canon EOS 5D

Modest win on the Lottery?: Nikon D2x / Canon EOS 1D Mk2N

Raiding Daddy’s Trust fund/fishing down the back of Paris Hilton’s Sofa: Canon EOS 1DS Mk2

Welcome to the scary money pit that is the DSLR hobbyist corner….
