How is it decided that threads are tossed in the graveyard? I've seen threads up for less than a day that are hidden away in the graveyard. Why even have a graveyard, if people can't discuss what's there anyway? Wen
Actually, it looks to me more like a convenient way of censoring certain points of view. Moderators don't like someone's point of view? The thread is relegated to the Graveyard where no one is likely to read it. Wen
I don't think moving a discussion to a place where everyone can read it and highlighting it as "new" qualifies as censorship. The reason (as has already been pointed out on numerous occasions) is that some people want to carry on bringing up the same point that they have already discussed to death and have nothing new to contribute. But if you want to call it censorship that's fine with me, it's caedes site and if he wants to censor people who ignore his requests to stop whinging that's fair enough. I know I wouldn't allow these people to carry on that way on any website of mine.
Thanks for allowing me my opinion, Sam. I was simply calling it the way I saw it. I didn't suggest that dissidents were "imprisoned," only "censored" at times. The views of those who take issue with the way certain things are done here tend to get sent to the graveyard in relatively short order. And, yes, Caedes can do as he pleases in this regard on his site. I've not suggested otherwise. Nonetheless, I do think it's unfortunate that people who share opinions which are critical of certain things here are labeled "whiners." I think that some who complain are honestly trying to point out things that aren't working very well, with the idea that doing so might lead to changes that would improve the site, rather than cause harm. I guess it depends on one's point of view. I know that the concerns I have raised have been well intended even if they have not been perceived as such. Wen
"Sharing opinions" is quite different from complaining and different still from complaining in a childish manner, which is the definition of whining. I consider a complain to have become whining once I've heard it 3-5 times from the same person within a relatively small window of time after I have already addressed the concern. The bottom line is that whining is also detremental to the site because no one wants to listen to it. For that matter, complains about site functions don't really even have to be voiced publically to be heard and acted on effectively.
Restaurants have a complain or suggestion box. They don't just allow everyone with a problem to loudly announce their dissatisfaction to the rest of the customers and then go around to each table repeating the same message. I think I would not go to a restaurant which allowed such behavior.
If it was me a lot would have gone into the graveyard sooner.. most of the threads in the graveyard are repeats of the same discussions just under different subjects, and most of the time those discussions get heated and out of hand.. its not a censorship because you can still read it, and your still free to voice opinions, just no need to keep on going with the same subjects all the time, I'm sure there are lots of other things on the site to discuss.. =) and I can feel this will be another one turning into one of "those discussions"....... just my opinion...
When someone is denied a voice in a discussion, that looks like "censorship" to me. The last "discussion" I launched here related to what seems like an aversion to fractals on this site. It was sent to the Graveyard in about 24 hours after a moderator took several paragraphs to question my motives and chastise me for what he perceived as negativism. My own comments related to what appears to be an obvious bias for photographs here compared to computer generated images. I didn't resort to personal pot shots or name calling but was curious as to what accounted for the lack of enthusiam here for computer generated images. I was quickly stiffled, and, rather than address the concerns I voiced, I was attacked in a personal way for voicing my opinion and then I was denied the opportunity to respond.
