I was fourtunate enough to choose where to go for vacation this summer for my family out of a random vote. So I was curious if any of you could perhaps post some places that you think are good for photography.
Visit the south of Europe. The Roman, Greek, Phoenecian, and Etruscan ruins that litter the place are amazing. The local architecture is highly stylized, the markets are quaint, the villages picturesque, and the people are friendly. I, myself have visited the south of France many times, and the place is gorgeous and a lot less expensive than Denver or Los Angeles. If you want to see some images (though not as good as Caedes) you can visit my travellogue to see what the place has to offer.
Well personally, if I could choose anywhere in the world I think the Galapagos Islands would be my first choice. From what I've seen it looks to be the most extraordinary nature reserve on the planet, in terms of it's wildlife. And the creatures that live there are not used to people so their natural curiosity means they will come right up to you, even go inside you tent if they get the chance. Plenty of photo opps there I think. YOu would have to be prepared to rough it a bit though, if you wanted to go to the really unspoilt islands.
hmm I watched a news report on the Galapagos islands tourist situation and how the massive increase is affecting the eco balance their. They have introduced a levy on visitors of $100 when you arrive to either try and discourage casual visitors or to help fund conservation work. They are also in talks about introducing a much higher fee if you want to visit particularly sensitive areas of up to a $1000. There are still many, many unexploded landmines (at the last count 18 months ago there were still over 16,000 mines still active) in the Falkland Islands although most minefields are marked on tourist maps. Apparently. So watch your step there :-)
Well, I'm pretty biased, but South Africa should also be in consideration. There's alot of things to see and do here, especailly if you stay out of the major cities and such. There's loads of beautiful coasts, game reserves and much more.
Are you looking for something different or similar to Canda? :)
Australia is very good if you like different scenery, especially the Kakadu National park, that's amazing, and the deserts here are awe inspiring (extreme bias...I know) and the rainforests of Queensland are great. Our beaches are, undisputed, the best in the world. Except South Australia....lots of sharks there :D
New Zealand has everything-snow capped mountains, glaciers, forests, Volcanoes, hot springs, wildflowers, odd wildlife (evil, evil red wine drinking, ginger beer bathing sunscreen destroying parrots) fantastic lakes and interesting cities, plus good beaches.
Europe is fantastic, especially for the architecture. I am slightly obsessed with Italy, the scenery is beautiful, the people are lovely, the food is fantastic and the culture out of this world. France is great too. And Spain.
Scotland is an interesting place, really wild scenery too, but lush and green.
Turkey? Technically half Europe, half middle east. Different, bustling place.
Vietnam has beautiful scenery and great food, plus really sweet, nice people. It's a great holiday destination.
And last but not least-the salt mines of Siberia. For those who love their gulag style accommodation :) (jk)
Hey - I've stopped in a few lodges and campsites in Kakadu (most notably the legendary/infamous Hunter Hilton) and they make a gulag in Siberia seam like a Sandals resort :-) Fortunately, Kakadu has a never ending supply of jaw dropping sights to keep you occupied - best time to go for maximum impact would have to be the wet season when the falls look their best and you get some spectacular lightning shows at the Arnhemland Escarpment. The downside of this is the ever-present danger of your campsite being washed away in flash floods and any creature with more than two legs trying to take a bite of you at every opportunity...
Crocs, snakes and lizards I can cope with - it’s the mozzies, flies, spiders and scorpions in your campsite that I don’t fancy too much - all of which are there in abundance in the wet season. Not bothered about the babies - leave them to the dingo's....
Those widdle scorpions are harmless Phil, and we haven't had a case of malaria here in oh...five, ten years at least. And those red backs are the friendliest creatures in Australia, if you don't count those fun loving dugites and tigers. Crazy critters.
Hmm, I'm now beginning to realize why Australians have been type cast as Steve Irwin and 'Paulette' Hogan's..."Don't let it take me!! I've never wrestled a crocodile.....I don't even know what a hootchie is!! I promise!!!"
*pauses* *coughs*
"Give me a tinny and put on some Barnsy and Farnsy would you Macca?"
I'm a lost cause...go on without me...
Do you reckon when Australians asked for previous models of tourist accommodation we got our order mixed up with the Russians-so they ended up with the five star resorts and we got "The Final Solution to the Backpacker Problem"??
And more on the 'where to go for fantastic photography front'....my Dad showed me some photos of his from Saudi Arabia, pretty awesome, especially the ones of Petra's sister city (which I can't remember the name of) Too bad you can't get a tourist Visa there...and that cameras are technically illegal if you're a visitor...
Oh and it's in the middle east too...
I'd definitely go to Europe, but try to go to different places like Portugal as well as the more popular places like Italy and France, as they'll be really, really busy during summer and the cities will be over 40 degrees because of all the people. England is so expensive, as is Ireland. Like 'oh my god I am Paris Hilton's dog' expensive.
Can we do a vote-everyone puts in their Top Five Places to Photograph and then tally the results?
I'll start,
1. New Zealand
2. Italy
3. Australia
4. Bali
5. Ireland
It’s interesting you say that about England and Ireland being expensive - as far as Europe goes - Ireland is actually one of the cheapest places to visit on average and there are only 4 other countries within Europe which are significantly cheaper than England. Germany, France etc are approximately the same whereas Italy is more expensive. Don’t confuse an entire country with its capital - London is quite expensive as are most countries capital cities in relation to the provinces - look at Paris for example - last time I was there it cost me £10 for a coffee.....
Look at this OECD Table for a rough guide to cost differences across Europe.
Oh my! 10 pounds for a coffee!
Maybe it was just expensive for me because of the conversion from Australian currency. Last time I was in Ireland we tried to go budget; staying in backpackers and b+b's, to cut the cost.
London was very, very expensive, but I did find Cornwall to be not so bad. You're right about the capitals of course; Rome in comparison to Lucca and other Italian cities (not including Pisa) is a huge difference.
I think most places seem expensive when your dollar is worth under half of someone elses :)
Also depends on the season high/low.
You've been to some great places Phil; I have always wanted to go to Kauai.
I haven't been in many places yet so I can only recommend what I know and that is my home country Greece. I'm sure you'll enjoy the islands, lots of stuff to see and do, many oportunities for pictures- u can take a look at my gallery. Don't hesitate to contact me for more info if you'd like.
My wife and I are heading to Ireland in August for a friends wedding. I'm pretty pumped about hitting the coast as well as all of those old castles. It should be a rewarding trip.
yep, Ireland is pretty much a constant treasure trove of photo locations - one of my favourite areas there is County Wicklow, but if castles are your thing, why not treat yourselves and stay in one for a night or two....
We probably won't be travelling over to the Dublin area, but the SW counties look like they'll provide enough opportunities to fill my compact flash card. Thanks for the castle link.
Thanks
