Enough Profanity!!!

I already mentioned this in the discussion on moderators but I feel it is necessary to be sure that it is seen and heard. I feel that you are doing a great job in the area of censorship but I would really appreciate if obscene profanity could be eliminated or at least restricted. I thoroughly enjoy reading comments, it is a shame that certain individuals have such a limited choice of thought patterns and available adjectives.
Once again in advance, thank you Caedes.

P.S. If anyone else feels the same, please support me and make it "our" stance and not just my own. Thank you!

This website is one of my absolute favourites, because it gives people a chance to exchange their own photos/artistic creations and subject them to criticism in an open-minded atmosphere. I therefore agree that it should be free from erhem... offensive adjectives. I think people that are serious about this site and the opportunities it provides, should indeed be able to express their thoughts in a more sophisticated manner. It has to be said that I haven't come across very much profanity, mostly people seem to know what is appropriate for the situation.
Thanks Caedes

Thank you Ferg, and it is true that there is not a lot of profanity. Nevertheless, if you view a lot of pictures, you will come across it, and it is in very poor taste.

It is necessary to be tolerant, I think.
It is not necessary to name moderators to censor commentaries... We are in democracy and all the commentaries are welcome. You can appreciate the good and can be unaware of the bad...

This is true, and I have to say that this sort of thing doesn't offend me- it would just be nicer without. Of course, I'm aware that Caedes has better things to do than crawling through all the chats deleting Eff words. Then again, democracy doesn't have much to do with people swearing... My ballott paper: Lib Dem: Hell yeah; Conservative: Go f*** yourselves; Labour: jump off a cliff you b*******. I think not : )

I think this is a VERY touchy area. First you must ask the question, "What is profane?"
Unfortunately, this is an inherently unanswerable question since the definition of profanity
is very subjective. If I post a comment like, "What a f**kin' awesome image!", is that
profane? A tastefully done nude may seem profane to a 70 year old nun but not to a 34 year old dock worker. I also don't think the problem is profanity per se. The only problem
I've had in the discussion areas here are users who post non-contributive inflammatory
responses.

I think we were mainly talking about verbaly profane communications. In general you are correct that censorship can be harmful, however I'm more interested in promoting mature conversation than I am in ensuring that every kid with an attitude can flame with reckless abandon. Of course that's easy for me to say because I'm the one who edits messages.

ppigeon: To tolerate is to put up with, and why must we put up with those with no self control? It is unecessary to use profanity in commentaries on such a simple subject as photography. We come as members here to view and enjoy caedes artwork, if you want to curse, take it elsewhere. This is not the place. I suppose no matter where you go there will always be that one person trying to be politically correct.

Thanks to the ImagesMods we can avoid all drift in pictures. Imagine commentaries that we would have if we didn't have a censorship in pictures. In comparison with other sites, I can tell you that this site is indeed correct.

OK, maybe they are "just words" but since this is a website - no one can see your facial expressions or other body language that goes along with the words you speak. So then it becomes more difficult to judge what would be an appropriate "swear" - as I'm sure you all know - feeling is lost in e-mail. The quality of our thoughts can only be as good as the words we speak.

But why would you care what their "body language" is if you can't see them? I agree with Ozman.. It's not THAT big of a deal.. (Then again, this comes from a 15 year old..)

Profanity, like pornography, is in the mind of the beholder (or of ) the ommunity or brosdercsocary.). There is a unique background to each o us in this regard as individuals, and we judge from the standards we grew up with, profess to know and understand, or blindly accept or believe as immutable. If we respect one another on this site, as I hope we do, anddisplay appropriayecserve asn willingf to lidten, then we will not despoil the forum.

words are never just words. if words didn't have meaning and implication, what would be the point of having words? so we need to exercise responsibility in our conversations and comments in what words we use. i heard a quote once that went like this: "profanity is the last effort of the weak-minded to be understood." not to offend anyone and not to say that i don't let a bomb drop once and a while, but we should try and exercise (and have been, for the most part) responsibility. especially on a site of this caliber. great site caedes. keep it up.

i agree with the last 2 posts. I had someone make a comment on one of my photos, that it looked like a peice of s****. and while i do not mind constructive criticism, that was not my idea of it. i think the point could have been better taken had the choice of words been more intelligent. And as jim said, words never are just words, what comes out of your mouth is what is in your heart. And also i have been impressed with how the site is not riddled with profanity. personally i probably would not have kept coming back and getting involved in any way had the site been offensive.
just my 2 cents ;-)

I probably curse too much and have occassionally been compared to a truck driver or a sailor. My parents raised us to believe that the words were there for emphasis, and it was fine to use them, but to respect that not everybody would feel the same way.

I do try and am personally capable of using alternate words to express myself in front of people who are offended by it. Just as I am highly offended by racist slurs of any kind, and request that people who wish to remain in my presence don't use them.

*shrug* It doesn't take that much effort to be respectful of one another.

That being said… Timmy… the next time you want to dig up a thread to make a point to a specific person… would u mind just sending THAT person a link to the thread? thanks! 8•)

hmmm..for as much as i use every single ( well almost every) obscenity, and admittedly, a bit too much...i have to acknowledge something i was taught when i was oh, eleven or so, and took up swearing to sound 'cool'. my mother told me that 'curse words' were used by those too ignorant, too lazy, or too out of control to find the proper words...and the kicker: when you say them, which of those would you like to be remembered as? having said that, i do think alot can be if not ignored, at least put into perspective. there's too many serious things to worry, fret and steam about without dwelling on a person's choice of wording....

Yikes, I shall tiptoe here. I come from a very "expressive family". It is just how my community of people here at home release steam (not anger) and it the odd swear word is humorous to them. I think swearing can be very appropriate, funny and stress releaving if it is used in a non-abusive way. I don't use religious slang, but that is personal to me. I am not easily offended language wise, but sexual slander and tearing people down is not cool. We all have our moments, but I think intention behind our words is what makes them dangerous. You can say things in much more gross and poisonous ways with out using swears if you so choose. But I agree that swearing should not be tossed around in an atmosphere like Caedes. It's a public forum and could easily chase people away or make them feel uncomfortable. To those who are highly offended, sorry, we try to keep it cool around here. Tom keeps us on our toes by reminding us of the need for this atmosphere or atleast to instill in us the holy fear of the hall of shame (LOL). Swear words are bound to seep out of some of us every once and a while because we are all culturally different. The vast (and I mean vast) majority of Caedes is swear free, so I would insist you see the glass as 3/4 full, as opposed to 1/4 empty. We are many people from many different places bound to express ourselves differently. I'm still not sure what is all considered as swear words around here yet, so my apologies to Tom and Caedes if I've made your jobs any more difficult. I have heeded your warnings. But what I mostly want to get across is be patient folks, we are mostly good natured people with no intention of being offensive, we just like to joke around.
