You know i was sitting there thinking to myself you know i still think it would be so awesome to have a macro lens for my D70s just to bad i cant afford one... then i remembered my old camera and how amazingly it took macros like this one... and i can buy another one of these (Nikon 5700) off ebay for about $250... now call me crazy but dosnt that seem like a smarter idea for someone on a budget, all you really lose is everything that is good about the D70s and replace it for a so so macro ability

Well there's macro and there's macro... true macro lenses are pretty costly but I think they'll give you much more impressive results than a "macro mode" on a camera with a "normal" lens. Have you looked into magnification filters at all? Again, they won't give you results like a good macro lens but they might give you as good or better than your old 5700... and perhpas cost about the same, or even less... that way you won't lose any functionality either.

Hey Jeff, another very good option is to add a set of extension tubes to your fine collection. Check out Kenko. I'm not sure what lenses you have but they do a fine job. And for the Canon followers check this(macro accessories - reverse lens adapter)

I’m in the same position as you. For now I use a set of three Hoya close up lenses. They screw on my telephoto lens (just like a filter) and allow it to focus down to about twenty centimetres, closer if I use more than one at a time. One day though I will get a real macro lens.

Don't have a macro for my digital yet so I went with the close up set as well and they do a fine job. Any serious power is outrageous and probably just on a wish list for the time being. That Novoflex reverse adapter is a phenomenal idea! I'd like to see some sample shots with it though. The ones on the site look fantastic but not sure how 'true' they are.

You want a real crazy idea? In the spirit of Darryl's lamp-shade-lens-hood idea, this guy made a Pringles-can-extension-tube. Just make sure all the greasy broken chip pieces are out first.

Now there’s a competition idea, best photo taken through a pringle tin:-)
