Need Lens Recommendations

I'm a bit confused on where to start with buying a new lens. Could anyone help me or perhaps give a few suggestions on buying a lens or examples of lenses you would recommend. The camera I have is a Canon Rebel K2. I have looked on the Canon website and gone through the lenses however I dont know what I should start with. I just started photography this year and currently the only lens that I own is the one that came with the camera that is a 28-90 mm. All suggestions are welcome.

Any idea what you want to do with it? EG are you looking for a macro, or a zoom lens for example?

Nothing in peticular but I'm going up to Tremblant after christmas for a week so maybe something with a high zoom like a telephoto or ultra wide zoom I guess would work. Would any of you recomend the Canon DF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Lens?? I was just reasearching a bit and it seems okay for the price but im not sure if the lens is any good? Could anyone help me out with this?

Hi Riley, check here for a review of that lens plus many others. That lens does not sound very well built.

Hi .;-) i can highly recomend my Sigma 70-300. it is cheap, but for the money, it is brilliant. very good overall image quality(of course not like an 2000£ L) the af is pretty slow though.
for macro i have just purchased a tamron 90mm which is very sharp and good to use.
if you want a super budget macro, you could look on ebay for an old M42 mount 50mm lens, and buy some really cheap m42 macro bellows, and an Ef-m42 adapter. :-)

Both of those lenses for the price seem quite good however I just found a deal where I might be able to get a Canon Telephoto EF 300mm f/4.0L IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens for maybe $550. I was just curious if any of you would recommend it.

If i were you i would shy away from ebay for a lens. Yes you could get a great deal on a great lens, but you could also get a great deal on a lens with glass problems and no one to take it back to and with out the help of canon's warrenty (i would assume, because i would doubt they are an authorized dealer and if canon is like nikon, no authorized dealer, no warrenty). Of course there is always the smaller chance that you wont get anything at all after you have sent your money away. My oppinion is ebay can be great, but i wouldn't want to send alot of money away for something as technical as a lens.

Lens reviews will tell you the most. Hope over to fredmiranda.com (yeah, I am too lazy for a proper link today) for a good selection.

The biggest problem with the above lens would be its speed. Seeing as it is not fast or stabilized, you are going to have more trouble with light levels than preferred. I might recommend the 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus, but I am guessing that you would prefer a zoom.

Borrow money from pessimists - they don't expect it back.

Yea I looked at that one and was considering buying it but I found some guy who would sell his EF 70-200mm lens for around $500 so I am probably going with that one unless something better comes up within the next few days.

How fast is it? Is it stabilized?

Well, all 3 are "L", so they are all going to have exceptional image quality. The slowest among the bunch is an f/4, which is do-able. f/2.8 is very friendly, but the stabilized version is like a dream. For $500, I am guessing that it is the f/4. Just make sure you see the pictures before you lay down the cash...it would be a shame if it was all scratched up.
