Voting Booth Suggestion

I was wondering if it was possible to include a very brief description w/the images in the voting booth?

It occurred to me because I recently uploaded my 1st image, but it occurred to me later on that if I came across it in the voting booth with no explanation, I'd have no clue what I was looking at, it would just appear to be a jumbled mess. I'm sure other people have images that need a brief explanation to be truly understood & appreciated.

Maybe could be included as a fill-in on the upload page?

It's been discussed before .. and it has been decided to let all images sink or swim based on their individual merits

Basically .. Your image .. any image .. will be rated based on general appeal. Not how well you captured "Mosquito splattered on windshield" .. but .. on how appealing "Mosquito splattered on windshield" is to look at

perhaps I should have used a different example

The image being referenced = I'm so well rounded v2 .. (*link provided by the kind folks who have "linking" included in their self-portrait*)

Or at least the category of the image. Sometimes things we think are one thing, and you vote accordingly, and it turns out to be something else.

but the mosquito splattered in JUST the right spot on my windshield! It was PERFECT!

Anyways, I wasn't here for that, so I therefore insist that we dredge that matter back up and beat it to death again.

Since the images aren't even titled in the voting booth, you just don't "get" this http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=animaniactoo-1134397306.jpg
if you don't know what you're looking @.

I'd accept that it might not be the best execution of the idea, but I'd like to see voting and find out what people think based on them actually knowing what they're looking @.

There's a crash course in linking in the FAQ, I'd link you over there, but I've only done it successfully, with help, once *sigh*

I think that the fact that the image represents things you like/do has little effect on how much people like it on their desktop (unless the particular desktop is owned by your mom of course). ;-) As Keifer says, the image should be able to stand on its own as far as its suitability for desktop use goes.

ah... but I was of the understanding that while most of these make great desktops, not all art on here was solely for the purpose of being used as a desktop. This would actually be a really poor image for that, it's far too complicated & I know that.

It goes back to that age-old saying .. "I don't know anything about Art .. but I know what I like"

for example ... there are those that have never picked up a camera without taking a picture of their foot by accident and who know nothing of the finer details of the art .. (*like tempering finger pressure on the shutter button to capture an award winning image .. no, really*) .. they will judge your image based on whether they find it appealing, regardless of whether they have any intention of placing it on their desktop

the same can be said of Computer generated art .. although there are probably more hurdles to jump for these artists .. afterall .. who doesn't like an image of a squirrel looking cute .. but .. a swirl of color in the center of the screen that somebody is calling a fractal .. (*that took longer to bring into being than the push of a silver button*) .. is another thing alltogether

It is actually your HOPE that people will judge your image with at LEAST these fairness guidelines .. because several have said, in the past, that if it's not their THING .. they give it a low score

The problem with your idea is it has the potential to remove the anonymity of an image, which is one of the main points of the voting booth. I would like to see the gallery name in which the image is located displayed, this might help to make the idea behind the image clearer...

Can't we just take the people who violate anonymity in the brief desciption out back and dunk em in the lake?

Anyways, it's fine, I get it (mostly), and future uploads will be geared more towards desktop use. I'll probably convert portions of this image shortly since I actually really liked the background as an abstract all on it's own.

and ty for understanding Keith, I love ur comments, u make make laugh just about every time, and one of my hobbies in life is "being amused".

I do have one general question. I've been voting based on what I felt the quality of the art/image is, not how well it works as a desktop... maybe I should be striking a balance between the 2 here?

*sigh... If you walk into an art gallery and look around, and a picture catches your eye that you think "hmmm now that looks good" do you know who did it, do you know what the artist was trying to put into that particular picture? NOPE!!!! so it is exactly like that, think of it as walking into an art gallery (which is what it is anyway)..
Im sure that you know what appeals to you and what doesnt, if not I would be very worried.. =) The interpretation of art is a personal thing, what one person sees in it another sees something completely different... Thats the great thing about art its called IMAGINATION...
Im sure that you can look at an image and pick out (at least) the colour (is it good or too weak), lighting (too light, too dark or just right for the image), does the image appeal to YOU... I dont think you need a gallery name Sam, im sure you can tell if its a photo or a fractal.. (hehehe - sorry)

When I walk into an art gallery, I stroll around and look @ the art. There's usually a plaque w/a title & brief description, which I can read, especially if something catches my eye, but I'm not sure of the intent of the piece.

I totally get the need for anonymity, but if I was asked my opinion of something in an art gallery, the 2nd thing I'd do would be to see if there was a description on the plaque.

there you go.. you just answered the question... you walked in and it caught your eye FIRST.. without knowing who did it and without knowing what it was.. what was your first thought when you saw it without looking for the title and description? bet your interpretation changed when you read it... I dont see how if you were asked for an opinion in a gallery that you would have to look at the description, they would want what your first reaction to the image is, not what you think AFTER you have looked at it and said "oh so thats what it is"..
I have friends who do art for a living and yes the have their work in galleries, when they have a showing they walk around and ask people what they think of such and such an image, they dont want you going over to it and reading what their interpretation is they WANT to know what YOURS is..

I understand that art is visceral & personal, and that each person has a unique reaction to it. What you bring to it says alot about what you get out of it. There are wide areas of art that need no explanation, however there are small areas that do require a little bit of background to be truly understood & appreciated.

I brought up this topic because of that small area, and now I know that it's already been discussed, debated & decided against. In truth, I was really only kidding when I said I insist we beat it to death again.

There certainly isn't any problem with having these discussions. I think they can be quite enjoyable as long as no one gets too dogmatic in their viewpoint.

Arf! Arf! - Sorry it slipped out.

This site is ultimately intended to be used for exchanging wallpaper, and though I also upload stuff that's more appropriate as art than wallpaper I realized the c-index is really representational of what people think of my images as wallpaper. It's really OK. After all as Caedes has many times pointed out - the c-index really means nothing at all.

lol. That's really good to know... I was about to into a decline and waste away @ the c-index I got *grin*

Seriously though, I would like to know... should I be voting on quality of art? useability as wallpaper? combination of the 2? are there any guidelines here apart from "oooo... I like that?"

You should be voting on whatever criterion you feel is appropriate for a particular piece. I use the wallpaper criterion for certain images, and the art criterion for others. I guess it depends on what I feel the artist was trying to create.
