B&W or Color to B&W

In your opinion is it better to take a B&W photo or take one in color and change it over to B&W in Photoshop? Is there a difference or loss if transfered from color to B&W using PS?

Thanks,
Randy

Randy - if you are talking about digital images - your probably best working in colour first and converting to mono post process. see this thread or this tutorial for more info.

Yes, a digital image. I have a Canon S2 IS and love B&W so I set it up to take B&W but some would rather see color, hence my above question. I should've been more specific, sorry. Thanks for the response and the thread. :)

I agree with Phil, take them in colour. You will find some don’t look so good in black & white but are quite OK in colour so you will get more keepers.

There are three colours, Ten digits and seven notes, its what we do with them that’s important. Ruth Ross

I would also agree that color is the best way to shoot because then you have options. If you take it in black and white that is how it is no matter if you decide color would look better. If it is taken in color you can find out what it looks like black and white no problem and still go back to color if its not as good.

Its time for a new sig for me, so it is for sale. Any offers can be made via a message in my profile.

Also if you take the picture in color, you can use photoshop's channel mixer adjustment layer to get the best black and white photo. It's like having every possible color filter at your disposal to make your black and white tones exactly how you want them.

Thanks soooo much for all who responded!!! Sounds like I need to shoot color then do a little "dark room" edit to see B&W. It makes sense to me, more options...and options are always good! :)
