I have recently been asked if I could create a gallery for my work just to show to a few people who have been intrested. And although Im young to be doing this I think its good to learn early. I was just curious what types of photographs people generally look for in a portfolio. Im unsure what people generally look for when they go throught a portfolio and what I should have. Although I dont have much in my gallery here I have tons more images at home that I can use that I have taken over the past few months that I have been experimenting with photography. I would really appreciate some different points of view for this one and in paticular your own opinion of what you would look for if you were interviewing someone.
It really depends on the job or position you're going for as to what you want to include. Who's on the other side of the desk so to speak. A while back noobguy (anthony ) was going for a position on a local newspaper and asked this question. You can find and follow that discussion on page 6 here under the topic "Noob needs assistance with a possible internship" Good advice throughout.
Well .. let's clarify .. do you mean (1) a "printed" portfolio that you would show an employer .. or do you mean (2) a "gallery" for your friends and family, that know you do photography, to look at
because your post could be interpreted both ways
if (1) then .. Only your best work. Only a couple examples of each category (depends on what it is for, as Kilie (dreamer100) said) ... Black&White, Documentary, Journalistic, People, Action ... as you do not want to waste somebody's time .. but, yet, need to show you have experience in that area
if (2) then .. the sky's the limit .. bore 'em to tears .. what are they gonna do? .. cut you out of the will?
Thank you soo much, I appreciate it that link was more helpfull than I expected. The only problem I have is that I dont have any fast action pictures. Mainly because whenever I try to capture one it always comes out blurry. Do any of you know how to fix this? Just in case you need to know my camera is a Rebel K2 and it uses regular film.
You need to increase your shutter speed. I believe you will have a stick man figure icon on the dial on top of your camera...switch the dial to that position in the auto mode. Otherwise you can switch to shutter priority mode designated as (Tv) on the same dial. In that mode you can set the shutter speed to what you want providing there is sufficient light to get a descent exposure.
