I got a Garmin etrex for Christmas and I'm just figuring out how to use it. From what I've gathered I need to spend an additional $100 for some software if I want to be able to get any real use out of this thing. Can somebody tell me if this is true?

Also, after exploring their site, it appears they want me to only be able to buy a couple specific maps rather than the ones I want. This seems more complicated than it should be.

Thanks for the links. I tried searching myself, but couldn't find anything useful. I excluded the word "user".

phil, I don't know exactly what "the moors" are, but essentially, yes. It tells you exactly where you are (within about 10 feet, usually) on the planet by gathering information from a minimum of 3 satellites.

go rent "American Werewolf in London" .. it was on the "moors" that our hapless heroes were left cornholed* on the roadside

*quaint (southern) American slang

and ... did ya get the one with the "beam me up scotty" button? .. because knowing I'm standing at X=3775 .. Y=8836 ... isn't a big help to me if I'm lost and in danger of being left cornholed on the roadside

and ... last, but not least ... have you heard about .. GeoCaching .. a treasure hunt 'game'

I saw a family out doing this one day in some obscure park i went to with the pooch .. so it's real .. and they did find the prize

(I don't mean to imply that the "prize" was anything worth having .. it was just the quest .. the adventure)
