I just tried to post to the "Per Caedes request!." thread and it won't let me, because I am not part of the Consul group. What is the Consul group?

You can't post on anything in the "Elephants graveyard" unless you have access to edit the site. Threads that are moved there are no longer active. There's a new thread somewhere in this forum that is basically the same thing.

So why were those threads moved to the Elephant's Graveyard ? I don't get it, they didn't hurt anybody, cause a ruckus, or insult another member.....aaannnddddd I was kinda looking forward to hitting the 10, 000 post mark on the Word Association one .....( Word Game, What's On Your Mind )

He made the suggestion that some of the old threads had gotten kind of repetitive and should be removed to make way for newer ones. Apparently somebody agreed with him. lol

How can you miss something that was almost instantly replaced by an even more vacuous facsimile? The word game had gone far beyond a game and declined into just moronic repetitiveness – by definition a game should be at the very least – challenging. The average well educated adult has a vocabulary of 20,000 words but only ever regularly uses 2,000 of them – presumably the same 2,000 that are in common use around the world. So if as you suggested, you let a word game run to 10,000 posts that would mean there would be a fair bet all the words had been repeated at least 4 times already – so hardly challenging, certainly not a game and definitely incredibly tedious. As if to prove a point – the word games that replaced the old ones have already started repeating words and they are only a few days old. Is it really so much to ask for people to come up with new and inventive games to try and exercise their imaginations instead of just recycling the same old crap day in day out? It is after all, a creative community :-)

My concern was mainly with the word games but as the TPBM and Will You? games are the same in all but name - whats to miss? who can say. I suggested on the dev site that threads of too great an amount or age should be retired on a regular basis to keep things fresh and topical rather than the same drudgery and to stop people ressurecting years old threads for no apparent reason so I guess the TPBM would fall into that category :-)

Huh. I was just over there & I could have sworn that was Cat's suggestion, not yours. Point One, and Point Two, who relegated you Word Game Judge & Jury ? There's a lot of youngsters on this site who don't have your vocabulary, so why not just let them develop at their own pace ? And there's a lot of people who don't want to play Blood Sport Word Games, that come on The Off Topic Threads just to while away a few hours & have fun. If you find the games vauous & moronic, then just don't play them.

Lauren - Point one better pay more attention and read. Point two - you don’t develop if you don’t stretch yourself - repeating the same thing over and over isn’t development its just mimicking. No one appointed me judge, jury or executioner; I was merely stating the obvious. And as for a new challenge – see Sam’s new game that has been largely overlooked – somewhat unsurprisingly.

Hey! Be nice! She was merely pointing out that it was my suggestion to ditch old threads that hadn't been posted on in awhile… which I made on your post about wanting to ditch the ones w/over 1000 posts. Give a woman a lil credit here 8•).

Frankly, I agree with her, some people play the more challenging games, and some don't. I see no problem with having some "easy brainer" word game threads, and if you know it's that kind of thread and you don't wish to participate/follow it, don't open it. When I post during the day here, it's usually in the 2 minutes that I have while one of my files is saving, and it affords me a quick piece of amusement. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that, I don't have to be a braniac and stretching my creativity 24/7.

true but is it really such a bad thing to encourage younger members with their vocabulary development? i dont mind the no brainers either but as i pointed out they become utterly pointless after a certain level which is why I originally suggested a post cap. I thought I was proportionately 'nice' in my response but if you think not then my apolgies.

I only posted Will you...? b/c TPBM was deleted for no apparent reason...this all just doesn't make sense to me and there's no point imo...what does vocabulary have to do w/anything??? why couldn't the "newer threads" just be created as you said to keep things "fresh" while having the old threads here at the same time...imo they shouldn't have been deleted.

I just removed the old threads because they had grown very large and were a drag on the server due to the large number of comments. You are certainly free to start up the exact same threads again.

It is good to learn new things and especially encourage the younger members. I just think that calling the threads "vacuous", which they may be both in your opinion and reality, is somewhat insulting and not a good way to encourage it.

Also, while some of the words may have been repeated 300 times? New people come along and post, and take things in different directions, make connections that maybe others didn't. I can tell you I certainly didn't read all 6000 previous posts on those threads before I started tossing in my random posts 3 months ago. They may be old to you, but they were new to me.

Cat if something is bad and you say it is then you arent insulting it and you certainly dont want to encourage it. I take your point as to the regularity of playing the posts but if, has as been the case, the same small group of people play it then that couteracts that argument. As I said I have no problem with the games as long as they are conducted as that instead of just rambling for the sake of it. I wouldnt have thought that the posts I raised were in anyway inaccurate or insulting - they were merely expressing a considered observation.

True, but there are ways to say things are bad, and not seem like you're denigrating the people who enjoy it. I'm in a position where I frequently have to give advice about art @ work, and extremely emotional situations in my personal life. I've learned to say things in a way which allows somebody to hear me without becoming defensive about what I'm saying. I don't always succeed, but I always try to respond in that manner (unless I'm just over the roof pissed off, and then look out, cuz ALL tact & consideration goes flying out the window).
