Dell Inc., the world's largest computer maker, said Wednesday it would buy Alienware Corp., whose high-ends PCs are widely acclaimed by video gamers for their fast performance and sleek, UFO-themed looks.
Dell, based in Round Rock, Texas, didn't announce terms of the deal. Dell said Alienware would operate as a wholly owned subsidiary and will keep its brand name and its own product development, marketing, sales, technical support and other operations.

Miami-based Alienware was founded in 1996 by Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila, two childhood friends. They will continue to run the company as a standalone unit of Dell, Dell said.

So why did Alienware make such a deal with Dell? According to what Agulia told us, he and Alienware President Nelson Gonzales started the company ten years ago for about $10,000 and as he put it, "The original $10,000 has taken us about as far as we can go." Agulia said that the purchase by Dell will allow Alienware to grow and improve in ways that the founders could not do. However, Alienware will remain a separate entity with Agulia and Gonzales remaining as part of the leaders of the company that no internal changes are being made. There was some speculation that Dell might force Alienware to stop selling PCs with AMD processors but as Agulia told us, "Alienware will continue to sell AMD based PCs". Agulia also told us that Dell has no plans to discontinue their XPS gaming PC line.

I have a magazine subscription to PCWorld.

And I was wondering what was up with Alienware as they were conspicuously absent from the reviews of the top desktops and so forth for a period of time. Their site looks almost identical to Dell's now.

It will be interesting to see the fallout on other special niche pc manufacturers. Falcon Northwest, VooDoo ... to name a few. Prices? Waiting with baited charge card in hand ...

You can build a PC for 1/4 of the cost they are sold for .. or find somebody who builds their own and add a little to that cost ..

I've never done that myself but I feel that I could pull it off ... so long as somebody told me what to do and handed me the parts and the tools at just the right time ... and kept their voice in a soft, calm tone.

and then patted me on the back while pointing out what I had accomplished

thats pretty spooky - Foamy The Squirrel uses an Alienware laptop but whenever he calls technical support he's always connected to the Smell Computer support hotline in India....

If the technical support reps (and I use that term very, very loosely) stick to their scripts, they should get to the root of Foamy's problems, hmm ... oh, say by the time you need to mortgage your house to pay for the next upgrade in Microsoft's OSs. :P

I build my own PC's and I bet Windows Vista Super Supreme will cost more than I paid for my whole PC. Naturally I want the Upper crust version of Vista. There will 8 versions I believe it is.
