Suggestion on Image Edits

Just a suggestion...I also post on a couple of other art websites and one allows people to upload minor revisions of images without having to start from scratch with votes and comments. Of course major revisions require a new upload. The way it's done is that the artist uploads the revision and it is reviewed by site administrators. If the revision doesn't alter the image significantly, the older version is simply replaced by the newer version. Otherwise, the artist is directed to upload the revision as a new image. I know I've often uploaded two or three versions of the same image because of some small changes and wish I could have run it by moderators here for permission to switch images. ... Wen

The programming on the site doesn't allow for that to happen at the moment, otherwise I imagine we'd probably be doing it. Probably worth adding to the dev site.

Actually it isn't the programming that is limiting. We don't replace the image because it would be confusing with the old comments talking about something that might have changed. If I was to add a minor revision system like you suggest I would probably just offer all the revisions for download instead of replacing the old ones. That way it would be clear that it is a revision and also what had been changed.

Of course the way people currently do it is very similar to this idea. Just upload the revision labeled by the version number and then link back and forth to the first image.

I figured you'd say something like that, Caedes. I just know myself...when someone posts a number of revisions of basically the same image, I become less and less likely to comment, especially if the revisions are minor. An example is the image I put up (and now replaced) last night. Someone remarked that the sun didn't look to be quite positioned right on the horizon. The revision was really very minor...I repositioned the sun slightly and re-rendered the image. Perhaps, if the artist uploads a minor revision, it could be noted as a comment on the image page. Then people who looked at the revised image could make sense of earlier comments that may no longer be applicable. In fact, how about a separate gallery category for such revised images? They would come up as new images, but old comments would be retained....? Heck, thumbnail links to the previous version(s) could be contained on the same page....<G> Thanks for letting me offer the suggestion. LOL! Wen

It really is the programming, you know. He's just trying to make me look silly.

(I think it worked...)

LOL! Actually, I don't see what would prevent such a change/edit in the programming, Sam. Every other aspect of the image page can be edited. I don't see what would prevent editing the image. Wen
