Can we use images from here as avatars (on this or other sites) ? Neither the Code of Conduct nor the FAQs seem to explain this.. I've seen a lot of good images I'd like to shrink and upload as icons..

I'm guessing that you don't need the author's permission to upload them on other websites (just not for redistribution) ?

Uploading to another website is redistribution, so yes you need permission.

This doesn't count for buddy icons of copyrighted images? As long as the copyright holder puts the image out there?

Out there? .. as in .. they uploaded it to the internet so you can do as you please with it?

NO .. I would think not .. unless you mean it never leaves your computer
