Resizing

Hi All....
Ok, I've tried just about any and/or all sizes to post a picture and it keeps
coming back telling me that the dimenstions don't fit to be a Wall Paper.

Can anyone help this novice in digital photography??? I'm using Infranview
for resizing if that's any help..

Thanks,
Ted

Ok, this is what I am getting when using the 1600x1200 settings

The image doesn't have the correct dimensions to be a desktop wallpaper

Feel free to email the image to one of the Praetors or myself. Then we'll be able to tell you exactly what the problem is.

just clicking on the 1600x1200 button on the right side of irfanview's resize dialog does not give you a guaranteed 16x12 image if the aspect ratio widget is turned on and the image isn't the correct aspect to "hit" those numbers

it will resize your "width" to 1600 and the "height" will fall where it may

Please tell us the dimensions of your original

OK .. I'll make up an example resize scenario so that I have numbers to quote

let's assume that your dimensions are 3500x2000 .. you can see this dimension on the bottom status bar (left corner) of irfanview when viewing an image

3500 x 2000 x 24BPP (24 bits per pixel = millions of colors .. ignore this for now)

and you want to resize to 1600x1200 .. Ctrl+R will bring up the resize dialog box .. notice in the bottom left corner of this box it says .. "Preserve Aspect Ratio" .. this means changing one dimension will change the other automatically to maintain the same proportion between "width and height" ... this is good .. this is what you will want 90% of the time

also .. as I said before .. clicking on the 1600x1200 button will set your width to 1600 and the height will fall where it may to maintain aspect ratio (when the aspect box is checked) ... so, in our example, your dimensions are 3500x2000 .. clicking the 16x12 button will give you 1600x914 .. this is short on the height dimension .. we'll fix that next

using irfanview, still .. go to the "image" menu and choose "canvas size" .. this will give you an opportunity to enlarge the height dimension by padding it out with black .. to do this take your desired size of 1200 subtract the 914 of your image = 286 .. now divide this number by 2 = 143 ... place 143 in the topside + bottomside boxes of the "canvas size" dialog box

this was, of course, just an example. I made up the dimensions so that they wouldn't be the proper aspect to hit 16x12 on their own ... the process would be a little different for a vertical image .. (you would 'value' the height and not the width in your intial resize)

If you choose to resize .. you may want to consider sharpening your image if you feel quality was lost .. SHIFT+S will accomplish this .. don't over do it .. and use "UNDO" (CTRL+Z) if you feel you went a step to far (irfanview only keeps ONE undo state)

`·.¸¸.·´´¯`··._.·`·.¸¸.·´´¯`··._.·`·.¸¸.·´´¯`··._.·`·.¸¸.·´´¯`··._.·

You can also "CROP" your image .. using our made up dimensions of 3500x2000 again .. do this

load your image in irfanview .. press "F" to make your image fit on screen .. go to the "EDIT" menu and select .. "create custom crop selection" ... click the 1600x1200 button .. (or enter your own dimensions) .. this will put a "crop box" on the top left corner of your image .. move it to where you want by using the "right" mouse button .. when it is where you want it go back to the edit menu and select "CROP" .. press "F" again to see your image at its full size .. and choose SAVE AS (to save it with a NEW name .. very important NOT to save over your original .. always keep your originals at full size, unaltered

even though you "scrunched" your image to make it fit on screen by pressing "F" the crop still works and your image is good to go at 1600x1200

questions = ask ..

(yeah, I know .. I confuse people.. myself included)

Resizing images is probably the most asked question .. HERE .. perhaps these might help

HEYYYYYYYY! Don't GIVE UP! We're willing and available to help! Once you get it down, it's a breeze and you'll never forget how to do it.

If you leave us now, we'll feel like failures 8•(

Let's just take it one step @ a time, okay?

You are likely the victim of the "Preserve Aspect Ratio" - which is usually a good thing, but you have to know how to get around it when it's not - when you're resizing.

Do the 1600 x 1200 option on one of the images you're having problems with. When you're done, check the size of the image it resized to, come back and tell us what it is, okay?

We'll go on to step 2 after that 8•).
