Time to revive the ANIME! WOOT!
I was a hard core Inuyasha fan to begin with and then after that everything else just fell into place. Mostly mainstream like Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, Wolf's Rain, Pilot Candidate, Case Closed, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, Gundam Wing, Seed, and Destiny, Fullmetal Alchemist, DN Angel, and most recently Escaflowne, which I recommend.
If the automobile had followed the same development as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year killing everyone inside.
Cyber City Oedo, the large city pan-scapes are imense. Dear Sadoc...............Ghost in the shell is a very good recomendation however lets not forget the "Fist of the North Star"

Legend of the Overfiend 1-3 is about as dark as it gets without being banned by the sensors. There are some other variants of Anime that involve lolita soft shots I.E. p++n for the lonely people market. Have a look at Vampire Hunter D for Gothy stuff and Ninja Scroll for some good imagination. For a belter of a feature length film check out "Spirited Away", Sadoc.
Oh i've seen that. . .and Princess Mononoke. . .all very good, Did i forget Ninja Scroll. . .i own all of the Ninja Scroll possible. . .i love it. Vampire Hunter D is pretty cool, i have seen a little of it. Gunslinger Girl. . .is interesting, i am waiting for new episodes to come out on DVD.

As of the moment my favorite animes are Berserk, Bleach (W00t), Princess Mononoke, Gun X Sword, Trigun and finally NOIR. I have mixed feelings about Evangelion though. The translation of that anime seemed to screw it up even more than it was. The last three episodes made no real practical sense to me. Maybe it was the antidepressants that the creator was on when he scripted this thing.
I've notice that the less the mainstream the Anime the better it is.
Cowboy Bebop
Hellsing
Outlaw Star
Yuu Yuu Hakusho
Inu-Yasha
