Suggestions for Keeping the User Gallery Fresh

I know Caedes is searching for a solution to the "user gallery problem", which in a nutshell is simply that it is getting too big 40+ pages at present. I think perhaps a solution could be that an image may only be in the user gallery for 3 months or so before either being upgraded if it is of extraordinary caliber or it simply gets deleted. Any suggestions are definately more than welcome. =)

What to do with the user gallery seems to be a circular debate on this site.=) I agree Beowulf in terms of a set lifespan of an image of ordinary quality. Another idea that would reduce the number of pictures is to raise the bar on the size requirement. While there are several good pictures in small format out there, I know very few people who operate a computer in 800x600 much less 640x480...

I agree completely. One way of keeping the number of pictures in the gallery down is by being more rigorous with the resolution requirements. I suggested something much like Beowulf's idea a while back (although probably not so eloquently), and think it is probably a very sensible system to adopt for this 'temporary' gallery.

I agree with what CrazyIvan said, we should keep out pictures at resolutions of 800x600 and less.

If a guy was going to do as you suggest first off you would have to determine the resolution that people use.My suggestion to determine that would be to take a poll on the start page that all users even non registered one's could vote on.It might surprise a guy to see the results. 640x480 is pretty low but if I think 800x600 is more or less a default setting when you take a machine out of a the box and alot of people don't change it.I personally think it would be a mistake to dump that size.I still say that the best way to remove images from the user gallery it to let the users vote if they should be moved or dumped, because if you just have a few people to decide I think that alot of content will be lost that people like. After all beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

regardless of default windows settings, when you set an image as your background, it scales the image to fit. there is no quality sacrifice for making a large image fit a small res screen, but if the image is smaller than the resolution desired, quality is cut back drastically. I, like most advanced computer users prefer as large as i can get in terms of resolution.

i have on suggestion... instead of putting a time cap on how long an image may remain in the User gallery, why not put a page cap. So that after an image gets past page, say, 30, it is either moved to a permanent gallery or deleted?

The problem with that is that the viewing time would be based on the site's traffic. So the more people upload images, the less time each image gets.

Why not put all images in the user gallery to a vote. If it recieves an average less than 8 out of 10 from 500 votes, trash it.

Yes, we'll probably do something very similar to that.

awesome
this reminds me, is there anyway to tell what images are new to the permanent galleries other than just looking at each gallery and remember what's new?

You can sort the gallery by date.

What I think he is saying is, how do you know if there is a new pictures in say the contest gallery, and a new one in the computer gallery. Is there a way to see where new pictures are.

Not right now. You just have to go to the gallery and see if the first few are new to you or not. Really that's not much different than what you suggest though.
