There was a TV series set in prison called Porridge but I don't think that would be the answer to no. 4?

I am sure porridge would be a solution for 4.. doing porridge means to be in prison.

6) RELIEF

Something in relief stands out and a substitute relieves.

10) a little room is a cell so I am guessing CELLIST. Don't understand where being on time comes in though.

8 - Thinking a film company, made up of a word for boss with the O from lions in it.

For 10) a winner is a Victor so are we being told to study that word ? Then there is the vict part which is the end of convict - convict with a bit missing. (missing prisoner)
I though Victor was the solution but not enough letters so am going for Convict although not really sure it is right !

Let's see..

4) Kick out and start to paddle in river and lake. (5)

"Kick out" is the definition.
Could "lake" simply be the letter "L"?

Solution: Expel

8) Film company boss with lion's heart. (6)

"Film company" is the definition.

Solution: Studio

9) Animal opening hospital. (5)

"Animal" is the definition.
"opening" an indicator word, with "hospital" representing/referencing the letter "H"?

Solution: Sloth

10) Study winner or missing prisoner. (7)

"prisoner" is the definition.

Solution: Convict

Sorry, I can't or couldn't be more helpful in providing some clues beforehand. There's a reason that these were assigned their respective Samatar ratings of difficulty.

There is a river Exe in Somerset so that fills in the rest of expel (start to paddle in Exe plus L from Lake). Bit much to expect people outside of UK to know the names of obscure rivers all over the world.

For "Sloth", "opening" indicates slot and then "hospital" represents H. There is no indicator, which I think is lazy clue writing. I really don't think it's fair to have a word just represent its first letter with no indicator...

Solution: Clear

"8) we have an ISP called 'Clearnet' in NZ so maybe CLEAR ?"

Well.. not entirely sure that how you arrived at the solution, Lyn, is correct (recall that these clues are coming from a UK source).. however.. your answer/solution is. :o)

Correct, Sam.

Re: 2) Total number, we hear, who like it hot? (4)

"Total number" = sum
"who like it hot".. references the movie; "Some Like It Hot", I believe.

The "?" is indicating a soundalike.. sum = some

Re: 5) Sport scaring hero badly. (5-6)
Solution Horse racing

Which.. is an anagram of "scaring hero" (sorted "badly)

Minor correction on the solve for "Copse"; the "se" comes from "start to search", ie the first two letters from the word search. That being said I don't know how I was unable to solve this one, cop seems so obvious now...

Caution. I once worked in a hospital for old people. There was one old dear who used to say 'oh you are a caution' if any of us tried to be funny. Actually she was quite a nasty old dear and was being sarcastic.. it is the only usage of it I have ever heard.
I remember that from way back when I was a teenager. And I mean waaaaay back. I just had my dinner. Eerrm.........what did I eat ?
