And thanks for the correction on 5).. forgot to put the number of letters required for the solution (5). It is indeed; "ruins".
Ok, still left to go, with some new ones:
* 1) It's cheap sort of imitation. (8) * 2) Small library's first new title (6) * 3) Cautious deployment of fur and lace. (7) * 4) Is getting in support to put up a fight. (6) * 5) Prize taken from astrophysicist. (6)
! 6) Team turning on renowned inventor. (6) ! 7) American editor may be employed. (4) ! 8) Fed up with idle artists regularly turning back. (5) ! 9) There's nothing about mother following a beast. (6)
* These are your standard, straight ahead.. cryptic clues. Figure out/isolate the indicator words.. well on your way to solving.
! Indicator words play an important part, as always.. however, need to put on your thinking toques for this group. These might prove to be more challenging, methinks.
"Cautious" is the definition.. and "deployment" suggests a sorting/rearrangement/"deployment" of the letters of "fur" and "lace" to give us the solution of: "careful".
Left to go:
* 1) It's cheap sort of imitation. (8) * 2) Small library's first new title (6) * 4) Is getting in support to put up a fight. (6)
! 6) Team turning on renowned inventor. (6) ! 8) Fed up with idle artists regularly turning back. (5) ! 9) There's nothing about mother following a beast. (6)

Hint(s): Re: ! 6) Team turning on renowned inventor. (6) Solution: Edison
^ Pretty good good hint, eh?
:oD
Truthfully, I am not sure how this solution is arrived at.. "turning" suggests flipping a word related to "team" and then adding "on".
So.. "side" flipped = "edis" + "on" = "Edison"
(*shrug*)
Where's Sam when you need him?
Left to go:

And recall..

There was a knock at the door, and when Snowmusic went to answer, a little old crone stood outside holding out a tray heaped with big Imperial Cookies. Warm, tempting and gorgeous -- golden pastries topped with sparkling white icing, a red cherry on each and every one. Snowmusic wasn't to know this, but they were not baked in any mortal kitchen! Instead they had been brought into the world by the old crone's dark arts. One had evil black poison lurking at its heart, but you'd never tell if you studied it for a hundred years.
"A cookie for the amazing Puzzlemeister?" wheedled the old crone.
"My favourite!" exclaimed Snowmusic. Forgetting the dire warning from his seven brothers not to open the door to strangers, he chose the biggest and best cookie from the centre of the tray, one that glistened like a slice of sweet winter, and bit into it.
In an instant he fell to the floor in a swoon, and, cackling madly, the old witch disappeared.
Fortunately a good fairy, who just happened to be floating past on a pink cloud, saw what happened and was horrified. She had one spell left -- luckily -- so twirled her wand, which had a twinkling star on top, and turned Snowmusic's fatal swoon into the deepest of sleeps.

Ive gone all round the houses for weeks with show of hands - applause, clapping voting.. Now I'm thinking along the lines of puppetry. But . . . I'm getting nowhere :) Or...maybe the show of hands is something relating to a card game ?

Stumped myself on number 4.Election kinda makes sense (show of hands = selection, shortened by removing one letter) but then the "and emerge after" is superfluous. But I've checked through all the synonyms for all 3 key words and nothing is setting off any light bulbs.
Ok, I don't think I have 20 years to work out #1 though !. Short show of hands connected to fortune telling (palm reading)perhaps ? mind is wandering off again

:) could be Dates - depending which direction is swiped ! Not that I'm in to Tinder you understand :)
But I think it may be "SHOUT" South being the direction, and mix up the letters to get Shout, which can also be a direction , maybe. Oh I don't know, that has nothing to do with a result has it unless the result referred to means the answer. Furthermore I am confused by the 20 years
Oh.......... wait a minute - fundamental = core, add S gives Score, a score is 20 ! And a score is a result !
Tada !!!
Thanks for the 20 clue :)
Now tell me SCORE is not correct and I shall probably give up !

Well without the 20 clue I certainly would NEVER have got that one. Like most cryptic puzzles once the solution is there it makes perfect senses and is screamingly obvious. As for the other it is driving me nuts. I wonder if the hands are clock hands.

Of course it was ! So annoying when it's so obvious. Good clue and answer. Annoyed with myself as polling was played with but I was too thick to associate any of it with the definition which was given on a plate by you. :)

I am not good at spotting clues. I love it when the light goes on though - like in that one as soon as heart showed itself the answer was there. I do find them very challenging and likely to send me round the bend (further than where I am now lol) My mother loved cryptic crosswords. I hate crosswords full stop. And jigsaws :)
