Artist Spotlight feedback

I am interested to find out whether the Artist Spotlight concept is meeting the goals that I originally had in mind when I started it. This is a poll of sorts, I would like to get as many peoples feedback as I can. Are people going through the artists galleries? Are they leaving any feedback? Are they leaving any critical feedback or just encouragement? Or do you tend to just leave a comment in the news item? Do you ask the spotlighted artist for advice or would you feel too intimidated or uncomfortable to do this?

I'm usually checking out the gallery of the featured artist but I rarely leave comments. I'm not a big fan of leaving "oh and ah" comments and have felt rather discouraged lately to leave critical comments. A few people do appreciate to hear that but there are too many "sensitive artists" around that take it as a personal attack that there could be anything to leave feedback in the form of criticism on. That, and I tend not to comment on stuff that have more then like 10 comments or so. (If I have nothing to add, sometimes I do.)

Whenever there is an AOTW, I always leave my congratulations in the News Item area then I usually try to visit their gallery during the time they are featured, where I will comment on some images, as many as time permits, and oftentimes find I have come across some great images I missed before...these comments are most often favorable and congratulatory in nature...while I will leave critical comments or constructive criticism on everyday images, I don't usually do it when the artist is being featured as AOTW...I don't think I have ever asked any questions though I would not feel intimidated or uncomfortable doing so.:Pat.

I always leave a message on the AOTW page of the artist, if its not an artist that I always comment on then I will go through the gallery and leave comments on some images, and I have found some wonderful images through this that I have missed... I have asked some of the AOTW's questions but that was before they were honoured =) I think the AOTW award is great, it brings the attention to the fantastic artist they are and who the person is behind the great art work...

I'm sorry Sam, I'm a bad boy. I always notice the AOTW and normally go check out their bio page, but that's about it. I don't check out their gallery or even leave a congrats and I know I should. I will try to do better at this as I like see new things posted on the main board / homepage.

~trots off to at least leave a congrats to the newest AOTW~

I have only recently started, and left with the last two or three, congratulations. I then do go through their galleries too, because I find it giving me a lot of inspiration to see what the "pro's" are doing, and how they do that. I'm often jumping through galleries that way, to see how and where and why people shoot different subjects. Also like the AOTW's "history". To see how they've started with photography, and what they do to improve or get the best shots they can. I have not asked any of the AOTW's any questions tho, becuase I don't like to "intrude" on people's privacy. There are a few people here though that have left comments on my work, which i sometimes "consult" for advise.

I enjoy seeing one artist spotlighted and look forward to see who is "next". I leave a note on the news page, then I review their galleries sometime in the following week or two. Many of their images had already caught my eye and I had left a comment, but in reviewing, I realized how many I had truly missed, so I was glad that I did go back & review the artist's work again.
I really enjoy the biographies also. I tend to feel as though I know the other artist's and the biography is a great form of communication in helping to continue to form these relationships and allows me to know someone on a more personal level.
I have indeed asked some of the AOTW for advice/help and have always been graciously received. The ones I have not yet asked, I am not intimidated by nor am I uncomfortable in asking them.
As for leaving congratulatory remarks or critical ones, I honestly cannot remember. I will leave critical feedback, but I am not aware if I have done it when browsing the featured AOTW gallery.
The whole idea has definitely raised my awareness of the featured artist's and their work plus I think the concept is wonderful and rewarding. Thanks for all the work/tabulating/writing that you do to keep this going Sam. Much appreciated by me :~)

I've been checking out the galleries and have found some really incredible images. I think I left a message on at least one artists personal profile, but I don't recall adding any comments or criticism on any individual images.

i'm inclined to think that criticisms or major suggestions are best when posted as personal messages. that way it's between the commenter and the artist. jen

Yes, I understand that is the more or less prevalent point of view. But I think it robs other people of a valuable chance to learn from others. I believe the community would benefit from a more open climate on commenting and criticism. Could it be a cultural thing maybe? Americans have a different point of view of what is polite and acceptable then Swedes in my experience. (Not that I have THAT much experience... ^_^)
