I am completely floored by these pictures... especially the landscapes. How are they created? Is this a single group doing this work? I have spent two hours at the site without taking my eyes off the screen. What is this type of picture called?

I'm a little confused at your question(s) here. If you're talking about computer generated wallpapers, they are the work of one artist using one or more programs. The photos are also made by individuals. I'm not really sure if this answers your inquiries, but I know someone else will be able to. ;-)

Lets see, like chamaelon im not sure exactly what your asking, so here goes. ... Well if its a computer generated landscape and not a photo ( hard to tell on some) then its an image created using terrain generator.. its a complex affair with many variables to master.. which i still dont manage myself.. but many people create these stunning masterpieces with seeming ease :D..i and many others refer to them as ter-gen.. when viewing an image you can find out who made it by looking to the author section.. on the right hand side.. next to the thumbnail... in most cases it's its just one person creating the image.... but on some images there are corlaboration efforts ( i enjoy these the most) here you will find the author is the poster.. but anyone else involved is credited in the image description..... does this help answer you question

http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ Here you can download Terragen for free, if that's what you're referring to. Please look through the "Computer -> Landscape" gallery and read the comments on peoples images, this will answer many questions you will no doubt have about it...
