Can anyone tell me what they believe to be the best place( with good service and great prices) to shop for cameras? Thank you.

well, once you get some recommendations on a model, brand etc...do your own research on features that you do and dont want (examples: optical zoom, MP size, film speed, etc)

then check out the major electronics and camera stores
b and h in manhattan is very reputable, and their site is chock full of info, even if you dont buy from them.... bhphotovideo.com is their site if i'm not mistaken

also try jr.com the site for J&R, a huge electronics place, but they're good for a bargain if you've already shopped around and they happen to have what you want on sale

It probably also depends on where you live. My store of choice is The Camera Store in calgary. I don't believe there is another one anywhere else though.

I got a great deal on my FZ-30 from Abesofmaine.com , though I do reccomend you purchase your accessories elsewhere, as theirs are overpriced.

I asked this question because I bought a Canon Digital Rebel XT on line at Genius Cameras while the $100 rebate was in effect. The camera included a case, a full sized tripod, lens cleaners, and a 512 mb memory card for around $700 including the shipping. I found that the price included the rebate (in small print on company info page) already though I don't know how they could do that and then I had to call them according to the e-mail with my order listed to 'confirm', When I called they tried to talk me into purchasing better memory cards, etc. I asked how long before the camera arrived and they told me one week. This was last Sat. that I called to confirm. On Wed. (today) I came across a web site called resellerratings.com where I looked up Genius Camera and found they had an overall rating of 0.24 on a scale of 1 to 10! All the customer reviews said 'highly dissatisfied', they switch and bait and hardly ever replace a product. I called my credit card company right away and discovered to my relief that Genius hadn't charged my account yet. I immediately called them and cancelled my order realizing that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. (I know, I've heard that before).
I was so disappointed about not getting the Rebel. I started looking on line at Circuit City, Staples, Amazon, etc. Too much money. So I posted this thread figuring maybe in a few months I can find another source, this one more reputable. Later in the day I found a place that listed all the companies selling the camera I wanted and listed their prices. I checked out a company called Newegg.com on reseellerratings.com and found they had an overall rating of 9.68!! Very satisfied customers and great reviews. I ordered a bonus package that included the camera, 18-55mm lens and a 1G memory compact flash card for free. (The card had great ratings too). And for $9 it is being shipped from CA to MA guaranteed 3 business days via UPS. My total cost was $759. I believe I did the right thing by cancelling with Genius and looking further even though I missed the rebate. It remains to be seen if I did well with Newegg or not. Oh, one other thing, they have an on line service rep who writes to you in real time answers to any questions you may have about the company or a product. Thanks for all your suggestions and Milo, I think I saw Camera Store on a list somewhere for on line purchasing.

When I bought my camera I found the best prices and information I could and then compared that to the best price I could get at a retail stoer; it didn't end up costing me much more (plus I didn't have to wait... I am pretty impatient when it comes to getting my hands on a new "toy"). My advice to you is, find out what the best type of lenses are for your camera and try to get a deal where they are included. I got two lenses with my camera body and it saved me alot of dough compared to buying them seperately later. If you have the money maybe you could try to get a good zoom and macro lens aswell as the standard portrait lens that probably comes with the camera... but as I said, make sure you are getting good quality. You pay alot more for good quality glass but it's worth it.

Oh one more thing; even if you had been charged by that first company, you can always apply for a refund through mastercard or visa as "goods were not provided as described" (ie they weren't delivered when promised). It's actually a really good idea to purchase expensive items with your credit card as you should always be able to get your money back if there is a problem, even if visa/mastercard don't get it back from the retailer; many cards also include additional coverage (eg Citibank has Purchasecover) that most people don't know about or take advantage of.

Newegg is a very well know online store in the PC forums I frequent. Their prices are good an the service is excellent. (At least that's what I gather from the other people seeing as Newegg doesn't ship outside the US I haven't used them myself). I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

I have one experience with Newegg and it was a good one. I didn't buy a camera from them. I bought a Magellan Roadmate GPS unit for my car. Caught it on sale a year ago July 4th. Their sale price was the lowest and shipping was free at the time. I had delivery within a week and the merchandise was complete as advertised. I hope you have as good an experience with the camera from Newegg Cynlee.

Just an old "Grampa" who still has a Kodak "Box" camera kicking around the attic ... learning and enjoying the wonders of modern digital photography.
