Have you ever gone to the movie store and thought man, what should I rent. Even though you just had a "my favorite movie chat" with a friend that week who loaded you with suggestions, you plain forgot everyone of them. Books can follow the same line. So folks, suggest some good reads and movies. New releases are fine but lets also look to dive a little wide of this if we can. If you would like to give a brief explanation of why you think your choice is great (without giving away the story and ending) that would be very cool !! Merci.......
Harry potter is in my current top 10 favs. You never know how good it really is (even though it has rampant popularity) until you dive in. You can't deny it's wonderful weaving of tales and great plotting.
My suggestion..............Khalil Gibran's "The Prophet". A lovely poetic eye opening read.
For movies...hmm........."Serenity", movie based off the sci-fi series Fire Fly. A surprisingly good movie (that you expect to be cheesy, but it's great). It was a new release last year(I sort of broke my semi rule), but hey, not everyone would know about this flick, it's that sort of movie.
I think my favourite book of all time would have to be "A Fall of Moondust", the first Arthur C Clarke book I read. I was up until 3 am because I just had to know how it ended, it was brilliant. My partner was very upset at me becuase I came to bed so late... but then he also stayed up until 3 am when he read it!!!
1) David Eddings: The Belgariad, Malorean, Belgarath the Sorcerer and, Polgara the Sorceress. 10 book in total.. a very good read.
2) Herman Hess: in general. Sidhartha is small and a quick read, but well worth it. Steppenwolf also is an engaging read.
3) Manley Wade Wellman: I believe it was in the 30's when he worte his stories. There has been some compelation books put together about a short story character of his, John the Balladeere. An excellnt series of folklore stories around the Appelation mountains of the east coast.
I'm gomma read Sam's suggestion. I've read some Assimov but I think some Clarke would serve up well. I let you know if it kept me up till 3!
Another is C.S. Lewis' space trilogy...........great books. The first one is called "Out of the Silent Planet". That should getcha started.
Another great movie: Blade Runner, hands down one of the best sci-fi films ever made. It has a very post apocolyptic feel, due mostly to the darkned skyscapes, stolid and fortress like buildings, the dirty streets and an air of futurism that is not tacky in the least. The characters are strong. The story is violent, beautiful, and poetic. The sound track is one of the best to ever match a movie with it's music and mood. Have I sold you yet??????
These 2 are hard to come by as they are out of print, but Wind Dancers and Wind Child by RM Meluch are great fantasy stories(kinda scifi/fantasy genre). Dean Koontz did 2 books called Frankenstein, and I am eagerly awaiting the 3rd in that series. Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks is a good and fun read. And hate to admit that I did jump on that bandwagon, but Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code was a page turner.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:: Never hold your farts in. They travel up your spine, into your brain, and THAT is where shitty ideas come from!!

for the few ppl who might not have read them by now, 'the davinci code' and what i feel was the better story, it's prequel, 'angels and demons' ..once you overlook the predictability and recurring structure in each book, the stories themselves were a fun bit of entertainment.
I saw a peanut stand, heard a rubber band,
I saw a needle that winked its eye.
But I think I will have seen everything
When I see an elephant fly.
