How do I...?

I am fairly new to photo manipulation (a matter or weeks) but I have seen several images posted that feature a B&W background with certain objects in colour. I was wondering how this is achieved.
I can only think of using photoshop to lasso the object then cut it, then set the rest to B&W before re-inserting the object.
Is this the easiest method or is there a much simpler way?
Thanks
Ieuan

there are a variety of methods in Photoshop to use - the easiest being using your history brush & palette - the most flexible being using layer masks. you can find various tutorials on doing this effect in the tutorials gallery over there on the left.....

You can also take a look at selective coloring tutorial. It uses the history brush method.
