It certainly seams to be a very well sorted camera and competitively priced that will surely give Canon cause for concern. My only worry (other than the plastic body) would be that Sony sensor that isn’t performing very well in either the Alpha model or the DSC-R1. Perhaps the combination of Nikon's better glass and 'in camera retouching' software will overcome these problems. It's also priced very close to the Alpha which could ultimately lead to one or the other eating into each others brand. Time will tell I guess....
I also think it looks pretty good. It is what i expected. A cut down version of the d200. Has some features in there that i wish i had on my d70, like the flash commandar, but it is still not enough to upgrade of course. I don't really think the plastic body is a big deal. Going from my plastic d70, it doesn't feel cheap, so i would think this would be the same. It will definitly be interesting to see what the sensor is like. Nikon has always struggled with noise. We will see.
the dpreview of the D80 seams to echo these problems - with noticeable problems with noise and metering, there is quite an extensive review there as well as a comparison test against a Canon 30D which appears to come out on top for image quality and clarity.
honstally i think Nikon should stop worrying about the amature SLRs and get something out that competes with the Canon MkII, because the D2Xs just isnt up there. So they need to make something better and have the D2Xs replace the D2Hs or make something better then the D2Hs that comes in just behind the D2Xs. Because really who is going to pay 3700 for a 4.1Mp these days.
Personally I like my Nikon, but I am getting sick of the fact that they are targeting the soccer mom crowd that wants to make pictures of little Timmy, rather then targeting the people that actually need the higher end equipment. I would consider Canon for my next DSLR.
