Dyrholaey Fires by jma55
This is the 10pm view from Reynisfjara beach, near Vik on Iceland's south coast, looking towards Dyrholaey, where there is a bird sanctuary and naturally formed rock arch and stacks. I'd spent a frantic afternoon running around scouting locations for later photos along this 5km stretch of coast for when the light would be right, then a frantic evening rushing between the various spots I'd picked as the sun started turning everything golden. As the sun finally sank, and I was able to turn and face the glowing sky, this was one of my picked locations, with a blazing sky as backdrop to the silhouetted Dyrholaey, and flowing seawater blurred by a 1 second exposure. I'm fairly pleased with the results...!

A shipwreck in the Transkei, South Africa by grizzlyjunk
There's an interesting story behind this wreck. Apparently, it's an insurance scam: The ship was wrecked on one of the only strips of sand for miles around, it crashed pointing towards the beach, and all the crew got off safely. However, the real bit of genius goes something like this: At the time of the crash, South Africa's apartheid regime was in full swing, and the government had split the country up into seperate states, or Homelands. All people from the Xhosa tribe were told that they now lived in two areas, one of which was the Transkei. If they wanted to go into "main" South Africa (such as the bits where most of the jobs were, and where they often already lived, anyway) then they needed a permit. Similarly, they were more-or-less allowed to do what they liked inside the Transkei. Hence the idea of respectable, white, upper-class insurance investigators travelling into the Transkei to look at a shipwreck was rather unappealing, and so the insurance company paid up without investigating. Apparently.

Beautiful Haystack Rock ! by verenabloo
This is Haystack Rockwith surrounding other rocks.. at Cannon Beach, Or. It is one of the most photographed images in the world. I took this view from the North side of it, from Ecola State Park. Being its a monolyth..it draws many crowds. When the tide is low there are wonderful tidepools at the base of Haystack. Its so much fun to see the seastars, the sea urchins, shells, small fish and little crab. And on the rock itself there are usually many seagulls, and at times when the tide is high the seals are swimming around too. It was such a perfect day! I sat at the picnic table and just "breathed in" the salty sea air..and forgot all about anything else...

Ocotillio by Surfcat
Temperatures in Temecula have been in the triple digits (Fahrenheit) for the last couple of weeks, so instead of going to the beach to cool down I went to the desert where it's even hotter. (don't ask me why, I have no idea what I was thinking) It was at least 120F (49C), so hot that I almost left my tripod behind because it was too hot to pick up!!!!!!!!! I just downloaded Adobe lightroom beta and this is the 1st raw image that I processed with it. I must say that I'm really impressed with this software. It gives you an amazing amount of options to use for converting raw images.

Holidays 1 by ovar2008
Marinha Beach - One of the 100 best beaches in the world (Michelin guide) Some of the best and most beautiful beaches in the entire world are to be found in the Algarve. Hardly surprising then that the region is a favourite for sun-seekers from all over. They come in search of the natural heritage that is now managed in a sustainable fashion, in order to provide quality recreational facilities able to meet all kinds of requirements. There are beaches to suit every taste with the majority having gained due recognition in the form of the EU "Blue Flag" for quality standards. Along its 200-kilometre coastline, the Algarve features all types of coves, cliffs and caves, its rocky beaches contrasting with broad expanses of sand. Different types of beach, but all bathed in the calm, warm seawaters of this coastline. Equally attractive is the Algarve's mild climate all year round. From Odeceixe all the way to Vila Real de Santo António, the entire coast enjoys a Mediterranean-style microclimate with temperatures that vary from 15º C in winter through to 30º C in summer.

Clash of the Titans by garrettparkinson
Elephant Seal bulls can weigh up to 6,000 pounds. While these two young bulls aren't there yet, there size is still formidible. This battle is about taking the beach and the females it holds. Neither of these two bulls are old and large enough to hold a harem but they are still driven to try. After all to the victor lies the spoils. Aging males basically centers around the size of their nose or proboscis and the amount of scarring on their neck and proboscis. The seal on the left is older and has the larger proboscis. Both are beginning to get the scarring around their necks. A truly old male's proboscis is much larger and is pink with scarr tissue. Ofcourse these guys are snug in the sand with the females defending their harems. The beachmasters can't be everywhere, so now and again a young bull will make it up into the cows, to possibly have his way.........

Winter Tide by jma55
On return from a successful photographic trip into Snowdonia, not two miles from home this photo was taken and is one of my favourites from the trip. I've never had much success here in the past - to emphasise the starkness and jagged nature of the wooden posts the tide needs to be in at the right time and in the right conditions, along with the right time of year for the aspect of the setting sun. The conditions were all there, so I made my way to the beach and walked away with this, along with a few others. As ever, f/22 and 20 seconds

The end of summer by Mannie3
This shot was on the Costa Da Caparica, just outside Lisbon. Taken of the 2nd October, the beaches are fairly empty and with no lifegaurd patrols as the beach season is 'offically' over. But it was still touching 30C in the afternoon. Looks like Autumn forgot to reach Portugal this year.. :-)

Dusky Amber Sands by Mythmaker
Amber Sands got it's name from the colour of the beach. This side of the island of Koh Chang faces the mainland, which is what you can see across the water there. The other side of the island is the white sand beaches where all the resorts are packed side by side the full length of many of the beaches. You can see that the full drama of the sunset was happening on the other side of the island but this mellowed out sunset was a pretty cool welcome to Thailand in my book. :) Enjoy.

Morro Rock - 1 by palral
Morro Rock is probably the most photographed and most recognizable feature in San Luis Obispo County. In the past my close personal friend Dorothy posted this, this and this. Today's posting was taken shortly after sunrise just as the sun peaked over the hills to the east. Since I'm only 7 miles from "The Rock", Ollie and I sometimes walk on the beach for miles.

one of my favourite places to take shots, the weather was not up to much so me and alice took a drive to the beach to play waves. :-) i know there is a few blown out bits in the sky here, but even on iso 50 and f22, i still had to over expose to get the blur i wanted in the shot. however, i still really liked this one despite the highlights.

Java Finch by garrettparkinson
We took our family vacation to Hawaii back in the beginning of July. I am just now getting some time to post some of the images that I shot. There are very few species of birds on the Hawaiian islands. Most of those are transplants of some sort or another. The Java Finch was brought to Hawaii ??????? Yes, these are wild or ferral birds. We had a cool tree in the backyard of the house that we rented on the beach. I set up each morning on the porch and waited for birds to come.

Just after a storm, the wind and clouds had moved out the night before and it was time to visit Long and Short Sands Beach close to Kittery, Maine. One stop on this trip was the well-known Nubble Lighthouse. I love the colors permeating the waters that seem to only show up in this cove. The waves were terrific !!! I am going to attempt another series and this will be the first post. It was a great day and one that was sorely needed...sunshine, ocean and a visit to an old and still-lively-with-color graveyard.... Hope you'll enjoy my short trip...it certainly did a lot to lift my spirits. :)PJ
