Approaching Thunderstorm 3 by corngrowth
The outward bound seagoing vessel (tanker) is approaching a thunderstorm. The sailboat however has only about one mile to go, to find shelter in the yacht-harbour of Flushing. This image was recently taken on the coast of peninsula Walcheren, Zeeland, The Netherlands, where the Western Scheldt river flows into the Northsea.

Edit: Tick has forwarded a question below. Like to give Tick and you some additonal information:

For Dutch people it's very clear what the function of the 'boat garage' is (as mentioned so by Tick below). I do understand however very well that 'foreign' friends have to guess for it. Therefore I'll try to explain this to you: "It's not a boat garage. These are traditional WATERmills. Their function is only to keep the polder dry (polder is the Dutch word for a tract of land below sea level, reclaimed from the sea, and enclosed by embankments known as dikes). The 'boat garage' has two entrances, one as a waterinlet for water in the polder towards the mill (on the rear side of the mill) and the other one as an wateroutlet for water from the mill towards the 'canal' (on the front side of the mill, as can be seen on this image). Therefore the water in the 'canal' has a higher level than the water behind the dike (at the background of this image)." When the watermill is in operation (wind will be required), it turns a kind of screw. The srew acts like a kind of pump. It's a process in stages to get rid the threathening superfluous water in the polder. This 'chain' is continued until the water finally reaches a river and/or the sea. In more recently constructed polders the traditional windmills are replaced however mostly by electrical pumps.

Out Of The Mist by gerryp
This is a picture taken in Oct. 2006. It is of a two-masted schooner which was docked at riverfront park in downtown Windsor on Detroit River. I think this ship was touring the Great Lakes. I know I took this early on a Sunday morning in Oct because I recall I could hear celebration going on across the river in Detroit, Michigan...but could not see Detroit because of fog. The reason for celebration was that the Detroit Tiger baseball team had beat the New York Yankees for the American League pennant and advanced to World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals...and we know how that turned out TICK!!...Anyways that is what I remember about that morning...

Ullswater's mountains... by fogz
..........the landscape around Ullswater Lake in Cumbria is one of the most beautiful sights I have seen! - breathtaking mountains and hills are on every side of the 6 mile long lake. This is just one of many I took on the steamer boat ride from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge - The intermittent cloud and mid afternoon sun created some lovely light across the landscape!

I normally just drive over this bridge but seeing the late afternoon sun giving it this golden look I stopped and clambered down a fishermens' boat ramp to get some shots. This river was recently in flood and some branches carried along by its flow can still be seen clinging to the bridge.Yesterday it was so peaceful and still, and it is difficult to see where the reflection starts. . . hmmm, didn't know what category to put this in so I decided on the most salient feature... Desolate. by barriten
A view of one of very few objects disturbing the saltmarsh vista of North Norfolk, UK, an area of long, low horizons and huge skies. These saltmarshes run for endless miles along the coast here, broken only by the odd part where a river meanders out to sea. The sense of isolation pervades everything once you get away from the coastal villages. I hope this image conveys the essence of this wonderful, lonely place. Enjoy.

osprey by solita17
Took a ride over to Sesuit Harbor, East Dennis, on the Bayside of Cape Cod, to get some pictures of boats (which I got), but I kept hearing the loud cries of some bird in the area... finally looked up and saw the osprey nest with one fledgling still in it. I waited, and sure enough, both parent birds came circling back, one with a fish in its talons... and I just kept the camera clicking. I left a lot of sky in this shot to express the freedom of the 'blue'; when these birds fly they own it.

Rusted Rake by photoimagery
This image was taken in Hells Canyon approximately at China Bar Rapids. The River here provideda place large enough for a small farm. The Snake River as it flows through Hells Canyon has few roads to the River. At the deepest point it is the deepest canyon in the US, even deeper than the Grand Canyon. At its deepest point it is 7,900 ft (2,400 meters). There are few places that are large enough to have human habitation and yet there are people living there. It is one of a very few locations where the US mail is delivered by boat (jet boats at that).

This, on February 21th, 2009 captured, image shows the rear side of some ancient houses in Middelburg, Zeeland, The Netherlands. As you can see, people who are living there have the possibility to keep a boat in their 'backyard'. Think therefore the title of this post is an appropriate one. More than two years ago (December 12th, 2006) I've posted this, rather similar, image. Think however the quality of this recently taken one, as it's taken with another camera, is far better.

Zeeland Maritime Heritage by corngrowth
On this image some reconstructed ancient Zeeland wooden fishing boats can be seen. These boats were built at the end of the 19th century, begin 20th century, and are recently reconstructed to keep them for historical reasons (as a kind of 'living monument'). During the reconstruction a small propulsion engine was built in as well, only for safety purposes (emergency propulsion). It's hard to imagine that fishermen had the courage to sail on them on the North Sea in the past, with no other propulsion means than sails. My late granddad was one of them. He survived on July 18th, 1924 a disaster in which 15 of his fellow-fishermen drowned after their tiny boats were struck (and sunk) by a heavy storm. Nowadays these 'living monuments' are only used for leisure/pleasure sailing rides on lakes in Zeeland. Sailing will keep them in a better condition rather than to give them only a passive role.

Hope you'll like this image. Thanks in advance for your comment
