Snatched away by Paul_Gerritsen
The trainer throws the fish toward the dolphin, which opens it's mouth in anticipation of a good performance reward. The fish is in mid air when suddenly, to the astonishment of the crowd and the dolphin....the fish is snatched away in another great performance. And I happened to pull the trigger, fast like Lucky Luke... Well I guess the seagull deserved it in the end.

Storm Clouds over Curio Bay by LynEve
Curio Bay, on the southern coast of New Zealand's South Island. This photo from last year was snapped just after sunrise from the porch of the house we stayed at. At the edge of the grassy area there is a steep deep drop down to the beach. There is something different to watch all day from this spot - surfers, sea birds, dolphins and of course the ever-changing sea and sky.
Canon 450D. Thank you for any comments :)

Southern Sights #18 - Curio Bay by LynEve
Curio Bay, another beautiful Catlins Coast Beach, and habitat of Hector's Dolphins, the smallest species (1.4 metres)and found only in New Zealand. This was the view from the house in the dunes I was fortunate enough to stay in. For two hours in the afternoon I watched two schools from here on the deck - the dolphins and the Curio Bay Surf School - both a joy to watch - and to see man interacting with these wonderful sea creatures was special. The dolphins are so graceful, and playful. I am sorry I have no dolphin pics to share - I did get some, but black blobs in the sea are not very interesting. They were too fast for me. There was no cell phone coverage and no TV but with a view like this who needs them. Taken with Canon 450D. Thank you for looking, your opinions are always welcome and appreciated.

Dreaming of Dolphins by mapbc
From the last trip to TX, the kids at the Texas State Aquarium loved running along with the dolphins. I think the silhouettes keep them from being too personal. I think everyone can get the feeling of what it would be like playing with these animals. To doctor it up I did apply a few tricks. Tonemapping, shading, texture. It may be over the top. I like it, but you all will judge it.

Want to hear something really weird, I have never seen a single fish or mammal such as sharks, whales, dolphins, tuna, marlins in the ocean during a cruise and believe me I have looked hard for any living creature. Happy spring weekend everyone!

Dolphin song for Pat Andre by Quiet
Dear Pat, I learned of your husband's passing today. I can't begin to imagine what you must be feeling. Whether it's a really bad or it's a peaceful feeling, I know for me that being by the sea grounds me well. When I was a kid, my father would take us in a speed boat. Although I loved the sea, I was also afraid of the speed and noise, and created a tune to soothe myself. Curiously, whenever I hummed it, we'd soon have dolphins alongside our boat as we sped. It was very comforting, so I called it my dolphin song. Anyway, as the years pass, when I find myself by the sea, I slip off by myself and hum the tune again - just once.. it brings me back to that deep seated peace and comfort that sometimes eludes me in my life. This seaside post is dedicated to you and your family. I took it in Antigua a few weeks back. The surf was thundering against the base of the cliff beneath my feet, and the wind howling in my ears, so I hummed the tune. Just after posting this, I hummed it again for you. Like sooo many others on here, Rob (RobNevin) and I are thinking of you. Quiet

Starfish Mania by ShawnM
This pic was taken during our trip along the Californa coast. The Pacific Ocean was beautiful as we saw dolphins, seals, countless shorebirds and of course .... starfish. This rock wasn't quite as full as some of the other rocks we saw further out but the 6 starfish on this one looked pretty cool blended in with the barnacles. It was taken on June 13, 2007 with a Canon Powershot S2IS at 1/320s, F/4 and a focal length of 72mm.

El Lugar de las Ballenas by UrsaMajor
This was taken in Nassau, in the Bahamas. It's actually not on Nassau, it's on a neighboring island called 'Paradise Island' (as you can see why). If you know any Spanish, its evident that there were whales near the island (dolphins, actually). No photoshopping done on this one, either. ^ ^ (but it was very tempting to edit out the top right corner). let me know how you like it!

Aussieland 08 by Helge
We started out from cairns in bad wheather. After a wonderful overnight diving trip on the reef we made our way back through bad wheather again. Suddenly dolphins swam beside the boat. After they were gone somebody shouted "whale!". I never had seen a whale before. It was a huge humpback whale and he would jump out of the water several times, but you never could quite tell where it would happen. Luckely this shot caught the dramatic moment. It seemed just like he wanted to show us how wonderful life was and everbody left the boat with a big smile.

This is my first attempt at Apop 2.08JK (thanks Lori) with certain select scripts (thanks Joanie). This little trippy thing actually looks like a dolphin seem from above when you see the whole thing. Sadly, the only way to do that is to zoom way back, which lost all this detail and color. I went for the lesser of two evils for now. I just started working with this version of Apop, and I think it has greater flexibility than the version I was using. I appreciate any comment, tips, (gentle) criticism from you, my friends. Thanks to all, and please enjoy!

Sunset Play by SR21
This was taken on our second sunset on our New Year weekend. The evening before we had said how nice it would be to see a dolphin swimming by. Well we got what we wished for and more, five came by and two of them liked to jump! He was at least 900 hundred yards away so his image is not as clear as I would like...but it was special!! :) Steve

Beach Sculptures II by allisontaylor
A partial of the Osprey Sculpture on Biloxi Beach. From the City's website: Biloxi's Katrina sculpture project began in January 2007 when Mayor A.J. Holloway and city Public Affairs Manager Vincent Creel spoke with Mississippi “chainsaw artist” Dayton Scoggins about sculpting marine-related figures from the dozens of standing dead trees in the median of Beach Boulevard in Biloxi. The trees were victims of the saltwater storm surge of Hurricane Katrina 16 months earlier. In March 2007, after MDOT crews "topped" the dead trees, Scoggins made the first of two sculpting visits to Biloxi, creating egrets, seagulls, pelicans and dolphins from a collection of trees just west of the Biloxi Lighthouse. Scoggins's initial five sculputres -- a $7,000 investment for the city -- inspired Fort Walton Beach, Fla, sculptor and frequent Biloxi visitor Marlin Miller to approach the city about donating his time and talent to sculpting more standing dead trees in the center medians in Biloxi. Miller, who exhibits sculptures at shows nationally, wanted to leave his mark on Biloxi and return the favor of Biloxians who had helped his community recover after Hurricane Ivan a couple years earlier. Miller's efforts represent the majority of the 20 works of art in Biloxi -- 15, plus one in progress, in fact.. During his multiple sculpting visits, he has refused any reimbursement or payment for his public works of art.

of Dolphins. They are bottlenose, but beyond that I'm not sure if there is further naming I should attribute. They swam along the shore, beyond the breakers and around the pier yesterday in Imperial Beach. I was walking down said pier, trying to get good pics of a pelican fishing, when I noted their dorsals breaking the water. This is one of the better ones. I know composition isn't great here, but they liked to all come up at once and it was hard to spot just where that would happen. One thing I really like is that 5 of the six visible are out of the water! Enjoy!

Poseidon's Trident by laurengary
Poseidon is a god of many names. He is most famous as the god of the sea. The son of Cronus and Rhea, Poseidon is one of six siblings who eventually "divided the power of the world." His brothers and sisters include: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Zeus. The division of the universe involved him and his brothers, Zeus and Hades. Poseidon became ruler of the sea, Zeus ruled the sky, and Hades got the underworld. The other divinities attributed to Poseidon involve the god of earthquakes and the god of horses. The symbols associated with Poseidon include: dolphins, tridents, and three-pronged fish spears. ........ Apophysis 2.02 & Apophysis 2.04beta with some post work done in PhotoShop. Qualified in Submarines by Skynet5
This is my first pair. The ones they pined me with. They will always be special. I never wear this set, it stays on the night stand during inspections or events and such. I have fancy sterling silver dolphins for my uniform. These stay close to me. They remind me of what it really means to earn the right to wear them. The shiny ones look great but don't speak for the hardships they represent. No matter how hard they may be to acquire, these fish are one of the highest honors our nation can bestow. Modern submariners have a legacy of pride and tradition like no other. After Pearl Harbor, with no real fleet to deploy, those men held the line in the pacific. 52 of them still patrol just to be sure. And for those I am thankful. I thought of this as a post last evening, for Veterans Day, but I wanted to use natural light-so you can guess why I'm posting now.

Dolphins' Playground by Akeraios
This piece just kept growing. I started with one "impossible" cube, then made a whole jungle gym of them, then I thought it would be nice to have some dolphins playing.

The top half is physically possible, with just some strategically placed breaks in the bars and the right camera angle. Then the breaks had to be moved for the reflection because it was a different angle. The dophins were rendered separately - they're actually reflections too, since the "water" wasn't clear. And I gave the whole thing a rippled, dream-like look in Paint Shop Pro.

Edge of the Storm by dragnfly
While on Sanibel Island, my husband surprised me with a sunset dolphin cruise. However, once we got on the boat and headed out to open water, the captain informed all of us that a storm was approaching and he was going to try and “outrun it”. All the way out we were watching these storm clouds gather. The captain assured us that we were safe and weren’t in any danger. Once we hit open water, so did the storm. Any of you that have seen the opening of Gilligan’s Island, pretty much knows what we went through. It was very intense and scary. The wind was howling and the waves were crashing over the side of the boat. Everyone onboard was wet and freezing. The captain tried to get us back to the dock, but the ocean was way to rough and the winds too high. He was, however, able to get us into a little cove. He called his boss and they sent a van to pick us all up. No one had to pay for that cruise and we all walked away with pictures like this one and lots of memories.

Kaliakra — a view from the fortress by sonyatod
Kaliakra (historical names: Thracian: Tirizis; Turkish: Celigra Burun; Italian: Capo Calacria; Romanian: Caliacra) is a long and narrow headland in the Southern Dobruja region of the northern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, located 12 km east of Kavarna and 60 km northeast of «the sea capital of Bulgaria», Varna. The coast is steep with vertical cliffs reaching 70 m down to the sea. Kaliakra is a nature reserve, where dolphins, cormorants and pinnipeds can be observed. It also features the remnants of the fortified walls, water-main, baths and residence of Despot Dobrotitsa in the short-lived Principality of Karvuna's medieval capital. The cove Bolata with a small sheltered beach lies just north at the mouth of a picturesque canyon, also part of the nature reserve. Kaliakra was the site of the naval Battle of Cape Kaliakra on 11 August 1791, part of the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1792. The first modern lighthouse on Kaliakra was built in 1866 by the Compagnie des Phares de l’Empire Ottomane; the present one (a 10-m cylindrical stone masonry tower with lantern and gallery) was erected in 1901, with focal plane height of 68 m and a white flash (every 5 seconds); it also has a radio navigation emitter and a foghorn. Near Kaliakra, there is a large mediumwave broadcasting facility, which went never in service as planned. Currently (2009), several wind power facilities are under development in the vicinity.

Colorful nook of Kaliakra by sonyatod
Kaliakra is one of the first protected areas in Bulgaria, declared a nature reserve in 1941, now covers a land area protected territory and territorial sea with an area of 687.5 hectares. Kaliakra Reserve is the only in Bulgaria, including marine areas and marine protected. Nature Reserve has a unique landscape and is the only place in Bulgaria, where he met steppe grasslands (steppe Kalekayrya). In 1981 in the sea caves below the nose is still meeting monk seal. You can see dolphins, cormorants Aristotle, the golden blackbird, Hoopoe, Calandra Lark, Pied Wheatear and other rare species, a total of 32 bird species the plateau part and another 12 on the rock ledges. North of the cape are two small wetlands — and Bolata Taukliman (Bird's Bay). This interesting waterfowl nest — little bittern, little grebe, ducks. Immensely rich are these places during the passage, where more than 150 species of birds stop for rest and meals. Surrounding rocks are a refuge of the owl, Long-legged Buzzard, endangered reptiles included into «Red Book of Bulgaria».
