This was taken after diving to the highest spot on Maui, Hawaii, which was 10,023 feet above sea level. Although it may be hard to believe, the temperature up there is near 40; very, very cold up there. The drive up requires you move though the cloud layer, which seems as if you are driving though Scottish, rocky mountain roads. The sun was setting as we drove down, and we stopped about 50 above the clouds. Not your typical vision of Hawaii.

We took our family vacation to Hawaii back in the beginning of July. I am just now getting some time to post some of the images that I shot. There are very few species of birds on the Hawaiian islands. Most of those are transplants of some sort or another. The Java Finch was brought to Hawaii ??????? Yes, these are wild or ferral birds. We had a cool tree in the backyard of the house that we rented on the beach. I set up each morning on the porch and waited for birds to come.

Hawaiian Green Ti Leaf(Cordyline fruticosa) This was photoshopped for a little brighter color. Anyone know why, that when I resize a photo to under 3000 x 3000, the file size goes from, for instance in this photo, 5.1mb to 782kb? And before I used photoshop, it was 3.42mbs... I'm so confused, lol! I can only imagine the loss of detail, I'm sure Caedes downsizes it too? Anyhow.. Enjoy! Aloha from Hawaii! ^_^

The Umauma Falls are the only falls in Hawaii that you have to pay to see (I think). They are on private land inside the World Botanical Gardens on the Big Island. Worth the 15 bucks, I guess.

How can you go to the big island (Hawaii) and not see a lava flow? It is pretty amazing. In order to get to the best viewing location (along with about 500 other people mind you) we had to walk across day-old land. Coming back after nightfall, the cracks below your feet <i>glow red hot</i>. Quite an experience!

I know I said I wasn't going to post any more picsfrom my Mt. Whitney trip but...I got bored. No new photos taken, anxious for my trip to Hawaii in 3 days....so I did a little work on this one and thought it good enough to post. The clouds were racing by and there were a lot of them...this is one moment where nearly the entire face of this huge mountain was painted with light. For those who care, this is Mt. Irvine, 13,770 feet, rising 1,770 feet above my shooting location.

This was taken while on a helicopter tour over the big island of Hawaii. It is lava flowing into the Pacific from the Kilauea flow. Lava flows down the island under the surface in lava tubes until they reach the shoreline, and produce a spectacular sight.

I'm a long-time fan of those who upload shots to Caedes, so today I finally became a contributing member. This is my first upload. Compared to some of those who upload images, I'm certainly no professional! Still, I primarily enjoy shots around Hawaii and of mother nature, and consider myself only an amateur. This is of the Byodo-In temple on O'ahu, Hawaii. I'm no Buddhist, but this place was beautiful to tour. Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated.

A shot of the moon from Hawaii ... actually from my backyard. Hawaii is a nice thought though. I was a somewhat amazed how well the D300 captured the moon. I apologize for the smaller size, but I cropped the original using the "clip feature" in the DSLR to get a closer view. It was still daylight when I captured the moon (handheld) ... I reduced the exposure comp to get a dark blue / black background.

Nikon D300; 70-300mm F 4.5/5.6G VR Settings : 300mm; ISO 200; Exposure ~ AP ~ 1/160s ~ F/5.6 ~ Exposure Comp -3.3 EV ~ WB Auto; VR on; Active D-Lighting set at normal.

Post-editing ... increased contrast to get black background & some color balance adjustments. I'm loving my D300. ;-)

Two Ships by hamellr
This year is the 99th annual Rose Festival in Portland Oregon. The theme is Pirate Rendezvous. These two ships came to join us in addition to the normal Navy, Coast Guard, Army Corp of Engineers, and Canadian Naval vessels that show up this time of the year. The one on the left, the Lady Washington was in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie and is a wooden replica of the real Lady Washington. The other one, the Hawaiian Chieftain is a steel hulled replica of a typical cargo ship around Hawaii.

A Heiau is a sacred place in Hawaii and the one we walked around was huge. There is a walk going into the lush green area and if you walk far enough, you get to see this view.
