Lotus Flower by bikolnon
Nelumbo nucifera is native to South Asia. It is cultivated as food and ornamental plant in tropical climates. At the west side of Echo Park in Los Angeles the acre-wide lotus bed blooms every summer and this event is the centerpiece of the city-sponsored Lotus Festival, a two-day event in the month of July. Here the lotus flower opens up to reveal a yellow-colored core which turns to green when mature. It is actually a seed pod, the seeds can be prepared and cooked and added in some Asian delicacies. More lotus pics coming up.

Little Blue Heron by Paul_Gerritsen
The Little Blue Heron, Egretta caerulea, is a small heron. It breeds from the Gulf states of the USA through Central America and the Caribbean south to Peru and Uruguay. It is a resident breeder in most of its range, but some northern breeders migrate to the southeastern USA or beyond in winter. There is post-breeding dispersal to well north of the nesting range, as far as the border between the US and Canada. The Little Blue Heron's breeding habitat is sub-tropical swamps. It nests in colonies, often with other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. 3-7 light blue eggs are laid. The Little Blue Heron stalks its prey methodically in shallow water, often running as it does so. It eats fish, frogs crustaceans, small rodents and insects.

Fantasy Island with Palms by WENPEDER
Did some significant revisions of Fantasy Island, replacing the barren island with one with tropical plants and trees. Placed a palm tree out of view, with just a few branches in view to give it more perspective. Hope you like the changes. Oh...I changed the flag on the one sail as suggested, but still might not have the wind direction signals quite right - - ?? Please take a closer look and a few seconds to vote. Thanks!

Butterfly 1 by LynEve
Today I visited a Tropical Forest- 30 degreesC in the middle of winter:) Opened last year at the Otago Museum (NZ)the $1.2 million area is home to approx 1000 butterflies, as well as a waterfall, tropical plants, birds, fish, and turtles, on three levels. I discovered that even with that many butterfies fluttering by it is no easy task to photograph them. Made more difficult by it being the last day of the School Holidays and the 80% humidity causing steamed up lenses. It was delightful to see the excitement of so many children as butterflies ocassionally landed upon them. I bought an identification card but am still unsure what this one is - I think perhaps a Blue Cracker (Hamadryas feronia). Perhaps someone will be able to positively identify it. . . what kind of bird am i? by jeenie11
i took this the same day i took the one of the royal tern. i have looked and look to find the name of this bird. can anyone help? enjoy!!! thanks to member "queenie" i now know about the bird. here's the info she sent me.Hi Jeenie. I looked it up in the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Birds. It shows a picture of this bird............... It is a female "Magnificent Frigatebird" (fregata magnificent). The females are distinguished by the white breast; the males, red breast. "The male has a throat patch that inflates to a huge size during courtship". They are "silent at sea; harsh gutteral calls during courtship". They are found in open ocean and inshore waters; nests on mangrove islands. They lay 1 white egg in a flimsy nest of sticks built in mangrove clumps. In breeding season, they are mostly in Florida Bay, and elsewhere in tropical Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In non-breeding season, ranges to coasts of NC, TX, and CA. Where did you see this one?? Not in Phoenix, I imagine! :-)) It also says "Frigatebirds, also called man-o'-war-birds, are among the most agile of birds on the wing. They have the largest wingspread in proportion to weight, of any bird. In addition to stealing fish from other seabirds, their most famous method of obtaining food, they can soar for hours" and then dive to grab fish or the young of other birds. "Frigates never alight on the ground or the water; their short legs and narrow wings maide it difficult to take off except from a height, such as the limb of a tree or a rock."

Butterfly 4 by LynEve
"The Clipper (Parthenos sylvia) is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in South and South-East Asia, mostly in forested areas. It is a fast flying butterfly with a habit of flying with its wings flapped stiffly between the horizontal position and a few degrees below the horizontal. It may glide between spurts of flapping". . . .I can vouch for it being a fast flying creature - all their flapping about put me in quite a flap at the Tropical Forest but this one obliged :) . . Paint the Sky II by Hottrockin
Here we have a Sapho Longwing (Heliconius sapho) from Costa Rica. Longwing butterflies are all distasteful, and Sapho is no exception. They advertise this fact with bright colors and slow flight. Longwing butterflies will utilize pollen as well as nectar for food. Pollen contains proteins which extend the life of the butterfly beyond the typical 2-3 weeks lifespan of tropical butterflies.

Nycticorax nycticorax by Paul_Gerritsen
Friends, I think I'll end my Dutch bird series with this one. Thanks for your nice comments on the whole series. This is a rare sight sight of the Night Heron or Kwak (in dutch). The name Nycticorax derives from the Greek for “night raven” and refers to the largely nocturnal feeding habits of this group of birds, and the croaking crow-like call of the best known species, the Black-crowned Night Heron. These are medium-sized herons which are migratory outside the tropical parts of their ranges. Adults are short-necked and stout herons; they typically have a dark crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, and short legs. Young birds are brown, flecked with white and grey. Night herons nest in colonies on platforms of sticks in a group of trees, or on the ground in protected locations such as islands or reedbeds. 3-8 eggs are laid. They stand at the water's edge, and wait to ambush prey, mainly at night. They primarily eat small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, and small mammals. During the day they rest in trees or bushes.

Pelican Flower by tigger3
Found this unique climber at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.

It was very hard to get a good angle for a shot of this flower, I have never seen one before.

Here is a description of the flower:

Aristolochia gigantea "Pelican Flower" An amazing tropical climber that inspires a sense of awe in all that behold its beauty. Even in partial sun, this Brazilian vine displays large, heart-shaped leaves and unique flowers. Ivory veining against a burgundy velvet background with long tubular flowers reminds us of its coined name"Dutchman’s Pipes." Hardy to Zone 10 and higher for outdoors. Full or partial sun, grows to 1-3’ in container, minimum temperature 50° indoors, vining in habit, blooms in spring, summer and fall. Great for a hanging basket! Fragrant!

Thank you in advance for your comments, and hope your day has been good.

Schoenbrunn Palm House by Blumie
The Palm House in the garden of the castle Schoenbrunn was erected in 1881/2 to designs by Franz Xaver Segenschmid. One hundred and thirteen metres long, the Palm House consists of a 28-metre high central pavilion and two lateral pavilions which are three metres lower. Linked by tunnel-like passages, the pavilions contain different climatic zones: a 'cold' house to the north, a temperate zone in the central pavilion and a tropical climate in the south pavilion. The necessary temperatures are achieved by means of a steam heating system which means that rare specimens from all over the world can be grown here. This impressive iron construction used the most modern technology of its time, with the materials determining its form. The proportions of the convex and concave lines of the central and lateral pavilions are perfectly balanced and endow the iron structure with a perceptible lightness despite its massive dimensions. Inserted into the framework of the external iron construction, the glazing clings to the curved iron girders like a skin. The Schönbrunn Palm House was the last of its type to be constructed in continental Europe.

Once called the Golden Swamp Warbler, the Prothonotary Warbler is the only eastern warbler that nests in tree hollows. Breeds mainly in the southeastern states north to Minnesota, Michigan, and New York. Spends winters in the tropics. Preferred habitats include wooded swamps, flooded bottomland forests, and streams with dead trees.

A group of warblers has many collective nouns, including a "bouquet", "confusion", "fall", and "wrench" of warblers.

Vienna by night - Schoenbrunn Palace by boremachine
After the victory over the Turks, Emperor Leopold I assigned J.B. Fischer von Erlach to build an Imperial Pleasure Palace on the place of a destroyed little hunting lodge. It was Fischer's intention to create a castle that exceeds the one at Versailles.

The emperor's budget, however, only allowed a complex of 1,441 rooms for that moment. Under Maria Theresa the castle got its current appearance. The Baroque castle's heydays came in 1814-15 when the “Vienna Congress” took place. The monarchy ended in 1918 when Carl I. made Austria a republic. Today the former summer residence of the Habsburger family is used for state receptions and other prestigious events. A total of 39 rooms can be visited - which is of course only a small part – but nevertheless, you get an insight into the emperor's everyday life. Its huge park is one of the most important Baroque Gardens in the world. Some of the other musts are: the Palm House, the Tropic House, the famous Schoenbrunn Zoo, and the magnificent Gloriette at the very top of one end of the park.. Likewise, the Neptun Fountain and the Roman Ruin are worthwhile visits. In addition, the park offers numerous fountains, cafés, sculptures and more activities – literally around every corner! Besides you can visit the Wagenburg (stable of horse carraiges) and the Schlosstheater, which is Vienna's only remaining Baroque theatre. Please note that the Schoenbrunn castle and the park are both declared as UNESCO cultural heritages.

Here you can see the Christmas Market in front of the palace :o)

So Happy Together by LynEve
These Chinese Painted Quail (Coturnix chinensis, also knowd as Blue Painted Quail or King Quail)were another delight in the Tropical Forest I recently visited. Each one of these would fit in the palm of your hand, they grow to just 14cm maximum. They were quite difficult to photograph due to their rapid head movement. . . Not knowing what they were, I asked an obviously delighted man beside me who was importantly focusing his very impressive camera and clicking furiously. He gave me one of those looks especially reserved for dotty old people and informed me they were birds !! :) . . . LOL . . Panasonic DMC-FZ7. Thanks for looking, comments welcome.

Tropical Waterfall by ajstri2
I visited this waterfall on a trip to...cincinnati believe it or not. this waterfall was constructed indoors in the crohn conservatory, although you would never know it had it not been for this caption. also this photo was taken without a tripod believe it or not, it took a few tries to get it extra steady.

Tropical Quiet. by Mythmaker
As Thai sunsets go this one is pretty quiet but it was the most colour I saw on my first trip, as it was the rainy season and for most sunsets I was on the wrong side of the island. This shot was taken from the shore about fifty paces from my front door, can't complain!

Enjoy.

Mikel.
