'caedes... not complaining... simply informing...
I, myself perhaps, liked the idea that we knew the number of votes for each topic. That way if I had added or voted for a topic that was trailing way behind... I could change my vote and go for one of the more popular items. :o)
To me, it seems to make for a better system, since the odds are it will be one of the first topics entered rather than one of the last that will be THE Topic! ...Unless we have a few days to add a topic... then a few days to vote on them. :o)

Edit: As duly noted below... you are displaying a bar graph of votes cast. Excellent! Thank-you Lori for being more observant than me. :o)

I could be wrong, but I think the length of the shaded line is an indication as to which topic is in the lead.

AH... Lori! I suspect you are right! I suggested conservation area (only because that would force me to go out and visit one) and it has a very short grey bar... nice one! I wasn't paying attention to the bars because they used to go to the right in 'caedes' poll. And now I see they too go to the left. Someone is doing some work around here! Hmmm. Good work too! :o)

When choosing a topic, I give thought to what can be more consistently evaluated (voted on by judges). Vertical has a common understanding - Moods is open the a range of interpretations, and while it may generate great entries, it would be a topic that is very hard to judge.

being open to interpretation is the whole point of an artistic endeavor no?

Gee, which one do you think I voted on? The winner gets flapjacks from Hottrockin as usual.

Just Lines ...
Now that leaves a lot open for interpretation.

sort of - or it will just lead to lots of pictures of barcodes or railway tracks :-)

Hmm ... 'just lines'?

Finally!

A place for the much maligned power wires, telephone lines, cables et al ... in an artful endeavour!

Not those lines for me, Les... I am allergic to them. :o)
I'd opt for lines on a curling or hockey rink... maybe the new transportation system in YVR! :o)

Perhaps more education of the Caedes herd might make chiaroscuro more approachable to the voters. Alternatively just call it "Light and Shadows:Chiaroscuro" next time it's suggested as a contest topic and people might have a better idea what they are voting for.
